Grandmother finds strength from granddaughter after both are diagnosed with breast cancer

Grandmother finds strength from granddaughter after both are diagnosed with breast cancer

For Lillian Gilbert, breast cancer has touched her family in more ways than one.

The 74-year-old grandmother from Madison has worked as a nurse for nearly half of her life, but in the past two years, she has dealt with breast cancer more than she ever thought she would.

Both she and her granddaughter were diagnosed with breast cancer.

Her granddaughter, Jasmine Davis, graduated high school in 2011 and was given a scholarship to play basketball at a college in Tennessee, but then she found a lump in her left breast that put a stop to her budding college career. They thought it was a cyst at first because she was so young, but after having a mammogram done, Jasmine found out she had breast cancer.

?It?s a different feeling. It?s an awakening and opens your eyes when you?re waiting on other people, and when it comes home to you, it?s totally different,? Gilbert said.

Jasmine ended up having to stay out of college for a year, missing her first season of playing basketball at the college level and ended up fighting breast cancer.

After doing several rounds of chemotherapy last fall, the doctors told Gilbert and Jasmine that the chemo did not shrink the tumor.

Then they found a spot in her right breast.

But according to Gilbert, Jasmine was strong, and shortly after a party celebrating her 20th birthday in February, she had a double mastectomy.

?I have never seen a young girl so positive like that,? Gilbert said of her granddaughter. ?She just wanted to go to school. After we got in the car after the surgery, she cried, but she was crying because she said she was healed.?

After her surgery, Jasmine began preparing to go to college and play basketball. She also began working with her grandmother at the Family Life Enrichment Center to save up her money for a car.

They thought everything was behind them; then something unexpected happened.

?I was laying in the bed one night, and I turned over and I felt a knot under my arm,? Gilbert said. ?I said, ?That doesn?t feel right.? ?

Gilbert called her doctor and immediately got a mammogram performed. Doctors ended up performing a biopsy, and just three months after her granddaughter had her double mastectomy, she was told she had breast cancer.

?I gained a lot of strength from her to see what she went through and that helped me a lot,? Gilbert said. ?I accepted it and I said, ?I am no different than anybody else.? There are millions of people around the world, even around here, that have the same thing. I am not exempted. I don?t know what purpose God has for me in my life, but I believe it is part of his plan for my life and I accepted that. I accepted healing.?

On July 18, doctor?s removed 13 of Gilbert?s lymph nodes, 11 of which were at stage 3 breast cancer. Gilbert will have her fourth chemo treatment today. She?s kept active in her church, though she has had to let some things go.

Gilbert has, however, had to stop working. She had to make the decision because of her white blood count, which has been low and on the borderline of the normal range.

From beginning as a certified nurses assistant in the 1960s to becoming a licensed practical nurse and going to college, she believes her love of nursing is what has kept her working for so long.

?Anybody else would have retired by now,? she said. ?I?m working at great place in Bishop, and the people there are so nice. I?m working as a direct care supervisor. I take pride in my work and just not wanting to quit work, so that?s the hardest part right now. I?m not ready to give it up. I?ll be 75 next year in May, and I love nursing. It?s all I?ve ever done.?

For now, Jasmine is getting ready to start her basketball season at Cleveland State Community College in Cleveland, Tenn., and her grandmother is hoping to get back to work as soon as possible.

?I love it there, and I?m not ready to give it up,? Gilbert said with a smile.

Apple executive shakeup: Scott Forstall and John Browett are leaving the company

Apple executive shakeup Scott Forstall and John Browett are leaving the company

Huge news out of Apple today, as its senior vice president of iOS software, Scott Forstall, will leave the company next year after putting in some 15 years. Furthermore, John Browett -- head of Apple retail -- is also on his way out. The memo was delivered late today, on a day that is littered with other news that the company may hope will bury the bulk of it -- and, on a day where trading on the New York Stock Exchange is halted due to Hurricane Sandy. It's practically a given that Forstall is taking the brunt of the impact from its decision to forge ahead with an obviously subpar Maps application, all while trumpeting it as one of the pillars of iOS 6 during his keynote speech at WWDC 2012. The introduction of Siri as a beta product is also on Forstall, and we all know what happens to executives who flub something related to iPhone....

As the shakeup unfolds, Jony Ive, Bob Mansfield, Eddy Cue and Craig Federighi will add more responsibilities to their roles. In other words, Tim Cook isn't about to usher in new help who may thwart the company's efforts to continue at its breakneck pace. Curiously, Mansfield will be heaping more on his own plate just months after he had originally planned to retire. As for Ive? He'll be responsible for providing "leadership and direction for Human Interface (HI) across the company in addition to his role as the leader of Industrial Design." Eddy Cue will be gifted burdened with Siri and Maps, while also keeping an eye on the iTunes Store, the App Store, the iBookstore and iCloud. Needless to say, he probably won't be seeing too many walls outside of Cupertino for the foreseeable future. Federighi is being tasked to lead both iOS and OS X, while Mansfield chairs a new Technologies group that bundles Apple's wireless teams across the company. (Of note, Dan Riccio -- who was scheduled to take over for Mansfield prior to his retirement retraction -- isn't among those who are gaining duties.)

Just months after Browett was brought in from Dixons in order to lead up Apple's retail efforts, he's on the outs as well. Of course, he's also responsible for the branch having to tell stores that it "messed up" when he fiddled with staffing levels back in August. A search for a new head of Retail is underway and in the interim, the Retail team will report directly to CEO Tim Cook.

Hello. My name is LORI and I was brought to BHS with my 6 kittens because we were found in someone's yard and that person could not keep us. I am really sweet and enjoy laying on soft cat beds and being surrounded by stuffed animals or cat toys that have catnip in them. I would love to find a forever home since I pretty much have only lived outside or in a cage- but please do not have dogs in your home if you are interested in me since I am terrified of them !! If you have room in your home and heart for me then please visit BHS soon to meet me. Thank you

Mechanism found for destruction of key allergy-inducing complexes, researchers say

ScienceDaily (Oct. 28, 2012) ? Researchers have learned how a human-made molecule destroys complexes that induce allergic responses -- a discovery that could lead to the development of highly potent, rapidly acting interventions for a host of acute allergic reactions.

The study, published online Oct. 28 in Nature, was led by scientists at the Stanford University School of Medicine and the University of Bern, Switzerland.

The new inhibitor disarms IgE antibodies, pivotal players in acute allergies, by detaching the antibody from its partner in crime, a molecule called FcR. (Other mechanisms lead to slower-developing allergic reactions.)

"It would be an incredible intervention if you could rapidly disconnect IgE antibodies in the midst of an acute allergic response," said Ted Jardetzky, PhD, professor of structural biology and senior investigator for the study. It turns out the inhibitor used by the team does just that.

A myriad of allergens, ranging from ragweed pollen to bee venom to peanuts, can set off IgE antibodies, resulting in allergic reactions within seconds. The new inhibitor destroys the complex that tethers IgE to the cells responsible for the reaction, called mast cells. Severing this connection would be the holy grail of IgE-targeted allergy treatment.

The first time a potential allergen enters the body, some people respond by making allergen-specific IgE antibodies. These antibodies stick around long after the initial allergen is cleared from the body. Most of the antibodies get snagged by IgE-specific receptors called FcRs, which are exposed on the surface of mast cells. The mast cells are then primed to react the next time a person encounters the allergen.

Dissociation of this IgE-FcR interaction is a sought-after goal of allergy treatment for a good reason: IgE-coated mast cells are grenades of histamine, and re-encountering the allergen is equivalent to pulling out the clip. When an allergen makes a return visit, it binds to the pre-loaded IgE on the mast cell surface, triggering the release of inflammatory mediators -- including histamine -- that promote the allergic response. As allergy sufferers are well aware, these nasty reactions can occur within a matter of seconds. In a severe allergic response, sudden anaphylactic shock and death can be the result.

The key to actively disabling the allergic response lies in the separation of IgE from the FcRs on the surface of mast cells. But separating these dangerous couples is a tall order because their interaction is extremely stable -- sensitizing the mast cells for weeks. Currently available treatment using omalizumab (an anti-IgE antibody sold under the trade name Xolair) can block new interactions between IgE and FcR, but it is not designed to pry the molecules apart once they've formed a bond on the surface of a mast cell. So Xolair can dampen the allergic response, but as stated on the product's website: "Xolair is not a rescue medicine and should not be used to treat sudden asthma attacks."

While simply blocking IgE binding is helpful for some allergy sufferers, when it comes to the rapid quenching of an acute allergic response, "what you'd really like to do is get rid of it," said Jardetzky. Along with scientists at the University of Bern, his team discovered that an engineered protein inhibitor called DARPin E2-79 stripped IgE from the mast cell receptor. Using this inhibitor, "an interaction that normally lasts for hours or days in terms of its stability is stripped off in a matter of seconds," said Jardetzky.

DARPin E2-79 is one of a family of engineered inhibitors containing protein-binding regions called ankryin repeats. While Jardetzky's group was using structural biology and biophysical approaches to probe the weak spots in the IgE-FcR interaction, scientists at the University of Bern were tinkering with DARPins that dampened IgE's disastrous effects. The collaboration of the two groups resulted in the characterization of DARPin E2-79, an inhibitor that goes beyond mere blockade to actively disassemble the IgE-FcR power couple.

Jardetzky's group solved E2-79'S structure and used this information to model its interaction with the IgE-FcR pair. Then, using sensitive biochemical techniques that detect step-by-step binding interactions between molecules, the teams were able to tease out the mechanism that the inhibitor uses to break the IgE-FcR bond.

The researchers found that E2-79 hastens the separation of the two molecules by taking advantage of a moment of weakness in the relationship between IgE and FcR. IgE maintains its interaction with FcR using two contact points, and occasionally one of these points releases while the other one keeps the pair together. Normally this brief looseness isn't enough to separate the couple, but E2-79 can swoop into the small space between them, effectively driving the couple apart.

While E2-79 is the first molecule to display these IgE stripping characteristics, Jardetzky hopes that this work will stimulate the discovery of smaller compounds capable of working even more efficiently. Drug developers generally expect large macromolecules like E2-79 to be less potent than small molecule inhibitors and unlikely to be able to disrupt complexes, so the fact that E2-79 worked so well was a surprise. Small molecules are more amenable to oral administration, and are easier and cheaper to manufacture than large macromolecules. "Now we're in the hunt for a small molecule that could have this kind of activity. That would be the real hit," said Jardetzky.

The discovery of E2-79's mechanism of IgE inhibition could lead to rapid discoveries from other labs as well. Now that scientists know what mechanism to look for, they may be inspired to dig back through freezers full of IgE inhibitors that were identified years ago, said Jardetzky. In the light of techniques described in this study, perhaps once-neglected inhibitors will show new promise in the treatment of allergic disease.

The study's primary authorship was shared between Beomkyu Kim, PhD, a Stanford graduate student, and Alexander Eggel, PhD, at the University of Bern. The other Stanford co-author is research assistant Svetlana Tarchevskaya.

The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health, the American Asthma Foundation and the Swiss National Science Foundation.

Sandy: East Coast braces for epic hurricane, ?life-threatening? storm surge

Waves crash into a pier in Nags Head, N.C., Oct. 27, 2012. (Gerry Broome/AP)

"Superstorm." "The Perfect Storm." "Frankenstorm."

Whatever you want to call it, the East Coast is bracing for Hurricane Sandy, a "rare hybrid storm" that is expected to bring a life-threatening storm surge to the mid-Atlantic coast, Long Island Sound and New York harbor, forecasters say, with winds expected to be at or near hurricane force when it makes landfall sometime on Monday.

According to the National Hurricane Center, the Category 1 hurricane was centered about 260 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., and 395 miles south of New York City early Sunday, carrying maximum sustained winds of 75 mph and moving northeast at 10 mph.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered the immediate, mandatory evacuation for low-lying coastal areas, including Coney Island, the Rockaways, Brighton Beach, Red Hook and some parts of lower Manhattan.

"If you don't evacuate, you're not just putting your own life at risk," Mayor Bloomberg said at a news conference Sunday. "You're endangering first responders who may have to rescue you."

Earlier, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the suspension of all MTA service--including subways, buses, Long Island Railroad and Metro North--beginning at 7 p.m. Sunday. New York City Public Schools will be closed on Monday, the mayor said.

[Related: Superstorm could impact 60 million]

Sandy is expected to continue on a parallel path along the mid-Atlantic coast later Sunday before making a sharp turn toward the northwest on Monday--with the Jersey Shore and New York City in its projected path.

But the path is not necessarily the problem.

"Don't get fixated on a particular track," the Associated Press said. "Wherever it hits, the rare behemoth storm inexorably gathering in the eastern U.S. will afflict a third of the country with sheets of rain, high winds and heavy snow."

(Weather.com)

A tropical storm warning has been issued between Cape Fear to Duck, N.C., while hurricane watches and high-wind warnings are in effect from the Carolinas to New England. The hurricane-force winds extend 175 miles from the epicenter of the storm, while tropical storm-force winds extend 520 miles--making Sandy one of the biggest storms to ever hit the East Coast.

"We're looking at impact of greater than 50 to 60 million people," Louis Uccellini, head of environmental prediction for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told the Associated Press.

"The size of this alone, affecting a heavily populated area, is going to be history making," Jeff Masters wrote on the Weather Underground blog.

[Also read: Big storm scrambles presidential race schedules]

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie declared a state of emergency, ordering a shutdown of the state's casinos.

"I can be as cynical as anyone," Christie said on Saturday. "But when the storm comes, if it's as bad as they're predicting, you're going to wish you weren't as cynical as you otherwise might have been."

Similar emergency evacuations were being mulled by state officials in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and even Maine.

"This is not a coastal threat alone," said Craig Fugate, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said during a media briefing early Sunday. "This is a very large area."

Forecasters also fear the combination of storm surge, high tide and heavy rain--between 3 and 12 inches in some areas--could be life-threatening for coastal residents.

According to the National Hurricane Center summary, coastal water levels could rise anywhere between 1 and 12 feet from North Carolina to Cape Cod, depending on the timing of the "peak surge." A surge of 6 to 11 feet is forecast for Long Island Sound and Raritan Bay, including New York Harbor.

The storm surge in New York Harbor during Hurricane Irene, forecasters noted, was four feet.

MONEY? News ? Online Jobs Expected to Increase in 2013 ...

St. Louis, Missouri (PRWEB) October 27, 2012

Online jobs are one way of earning income for some displaced workers or stay-at-home moms. While telecommuting was popular in the 1990s, the expansion of the Internet has opened new doors to employment. A new study reviewed by the CreatingJobsforAmerica.com website has revealed that online jobs are expected to increase in 2013 to higher than expected levels. Part of this expansion is attributed to the number of job layoffs that are causing more entrepreneurs to create online companies. The CreatingJobsforAmerica.com website is offering access to job and business training entirely online. This training can be accessed here at this link online.

A recent October story published in the Star Tribune brought to life the increasing numbers of adults that are preparing to work online or find accessible employment online. These trends are growing in many U.S. states as the job markets are flooding with recent graduates that already have computer and social media job skills.

Entrepreneurs in the U.S. have grown steadily due in part to the opportunities that are now available online. Part of the CreatingJobsforAmerica.com website information includes training men and women with Internet marketing business skills. These skills can be used to begin working online and are offered as an alternative to the standard 9 to 5 employment.

Government agencies like the Bureau of Labor Statistics in the USA has taken interest in the rise in online workers. New positions like social media manager and freelance writer have been added or updated in the published data to make public the growth of these workers online.

For those that are able to work online, the multitude of opportunities available is almost endless. The Internet marketing training offered through the Creating Jobs for America website is an example of one way that some are using to work for themselves online.

Some bloggers are earning upwards of six figures a year according to published data. While some bloggers write for corporate companies, many have learned the skills required to setup large and small blogs that can be monetized online. Part of the core training as an Internet marketer includes blogging and affiliate marketing income programs.

The CreatingJobsforAmerica.com website locates the best training and now offers this training to workers that want to leave the offline working world behind.

The training programs reviewed and offered by the Creating Jobs for America website all have refundable access fees. These refunds are put in place to help those that complete the training to earn money instantly instead of taking a loss on training that turns out ineffective. A 60-day refund is offered as an incentive to help online workers or entrepreneurs start earning money without the fears of losing training fees to learn new skills.

About Creating Jobs for America

Meredith Miller turns focus to breast cancer awareness as she ...

Meredith Miller, recovering from a hand injury sustained at day 2 of the Providence Cyclocross Festival (shown here on day 1), has turned her focus to breast cancer awareness. Photo: Wil Matthews | www. wilmatthewsphoto.com

On October 7, with two laps to go at day 2 of the Providence Cyclocross Festival in Providence, Rhode Island, Meredith Miller felt strong and in control. With five top-six performances in her 2012 ?cross season, she felt confident and ready to execute her race plan.

Instead, a crash and two broken metacarpal bones in one hand ended her day. It did not, however, end her season.

The California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized rider may be sidelined now, but her ?cross season is far from over. She told VeloNews Friday afternoon that she still has her sights on securing one of five spots for February?s world championships in Louisville, Kentucky.

After consulting with several doctors and visiting the Boulder Center for Sports Medicine in Colorado, Miller decided to undergo surgery for the spiral fractures in her right hand. Her checkup on November 18 will, she hopes, confirm her return to competition.

In the meantime, she stays fit by riding indoors, while at the same time raising money for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month through her team?s ?Pretty in Pink? campaign. Miller began wearing pink while racing cyclocross? in 2010, but has since developed the campaign even further.

?Wearing pink is great, but I felt like I was taking the easy way out,? Miller said. ?I wanted to do more.?

To date, Miller has raised $15,000 over the past two years for Hope Lives, a breast cancer awareness center in Fort Collins, Colorado. She aims to raise $10,000 this year alone. By selling socks, T-shirts, and bike jerseys emblazoned with the slogan, ?Pink is the new fast,? Miller is already approaching that goal.

She has also drawn attention and support for the campaign through an online raffle featuring her new ?cross bike, a SRAM-equipped Specialized S-Works Crux with Zipp wheels.

The entire Cal Giant cyclocross team ? whose men?s squad includes junior racer Yannick Eckmann; under-23 rider Cody Kaiser; Tobin Ortenbald, second this year at the national junior cross-country championships; and masters rider Justin Robinson ? is racing in pink this season to raise breast cancer awareness.

Miller aims to rejoin her teammates at races in California and Oregon in early December, race in World Cups in Europe over Christmas weekend, and contest the national championships in January. Racing during the holidays was not what Miller had envisioned for her season, but she said that, once healthy, she will do what?s needed to qualify for her fourth worlds team.

?It is a big deal having worlds in the States this year,? Miller said.

Rupert Murdoch, Customer Service Rep? - Gretchen Gavett - Our ...

On the surface, it's a simple customer service issue: Someone has a problem with your product. They let you know about it. You address the issue and find a solution.

But things can get a bit trickier if your customer service rep is also your CEO ? and if he or she is attempting remedy the problem in a very public way.

Earlier this week, besieged media mogul Rupert Murdoch, who by all accounts is actually the man behind 140 characters, responded on Twitter to a person in Kentucky who had an all-too-common newspaper complaint:

Murdoch, who joined Twitter in January 2012 and is known for ruffling a few feathers via the medium (calling Scientology a "weird cult" and giving Mitt Romney campaign advice, for example), was quickly praised by Zilow's CEO and a branding and social media expert:

Murdoch is a rarity among Fortune 500 CEOs. A July 2012 study conducted by DOMO and CEO.com found that only 4% are on Twitter and 7.6% on Facebook (by contrast, 34% of the U.S. population is on Twitter, and 50% is on Facebook). But an IBM survey of 1,709 CEOs found that, while only 16% use social media, the number is expected to grow to 57% in five years. (A pretty comprehensive list of CEOs taking the plunge can be found here.)

For the leaders who do Tweet, what they're saying (and doing) can be profound.

"The most spectacular example is is Cory Booker, the mayor of Newark, New Jersey," Rob Cottingham, a social media expert at Social Signal, told me. Booker regularly engages with constituents, and in December 2010 took to Twitter (and the streets) to help residents during a blizzard. And Craig Newmark, the founder of craigslist, has "customer service rep" in his Twitter bio.

But if a CEO doesn't know what he or she is doing ? or just how incredibly public 140 characters can be ? they can create a pretty negative media firestorm. Cottingham points to Kenneth Cole's ill-advised tweet connecting a spring clothing line to the "uproar in #Cairo" as a particularly boneheaded move.

CEOs also need to be aware that there's a "certain expectation that they're responsive like that, and it can look really bad if they're on twitter and aren't prepared to have that kind of interaction with their customers," says Kerry Bodine, co-author of Outside In. As former Best Buy CEO Brian J. Dunn told us in 2010: "You can't just dabble in social media. You can't use them only when things are good. You have to deal with rain as well as sunshine."

Keeping these issues in mind, there's almost no downside to having CEOs converse with customers, according to Anne Morriss. Morriss, the co-author of Uncommon Service, says Murdoch's tweets (in this case) were a coup for the Wall Street Journal.

"This is a point in time where newspapers are trying to figure out how to be relevant," she told me. "The fact that there's this clearly sophisticated consumer in the middle of the country that is so hungry for this service that they're going through this trouble to communicate about it in this very brave new-world medium that Twitter has become, is great visitiblity for the paper."

But we also know that some of Murdoch's other tweets haven't been quite as helpful as this week's, both to the customer and to the News Corp. or Dow Jones brand. Half the battle is figuring out how much leeway your CEO should have, and how to manage a customer's expectations when a problem arises. Cory Booker, because he lives in Newark, can actually go help shovel snow. It seems more unlikely that Murdoch can singlehandedly fix a newspaper distribution glitch in Kentucky.

"When the CEO gets involved, everyone just automatically scrambles," says Bodine. "The customer is going to get their issue fixed, and that's a good thing. But then there's the expectation that the next person who has a problem is going to respond directly to Murdoch, and the next, and the next, and that's not a susutainable way to run a customer service department."

Bodine suggests that combining an active CEO on Twitter as a brand ambassador with a smart customer service strategy could harness the best of both worlds. A CEO could respond directly to a customer complaint on Twitter and include the handle of a corporate account. "It accomplishes two things: Hey, I take your problem seriously as a CEO, but there are other paths for getting this done. [Murdoch] can't be fielding all their customer service calls because he's got other stuff to do." (Like managing a company embroiled in a phone-hacking scandal that's also in the process of splitting in two).

Cottingham agrees: "If Mayor Sam Adams in Portland says a traffic light's going to be fixed, then it gets fixed. Your company has to be able to track the commitments your CEO makes, and deliver on them."

You also need to be realistic about capacity. "A CEO's time is a strategic resource; use it wisely," advises Cottingham. "Being open and conversational can be a huge asset. Getting mired in Twitter and Facebook threads while your comptroller can't get your attention isn't."

If you can navigate all this, the rewards of a tweeting CEO may outweigh the risks. "I think this is a deadly serious platform that allows you to, in a pretty revolutionary way, have very public conversations with customers and communicate really quickly what your values are," explains Morriss. And, importantly, she points out that Twitter is a "cheap and easy" way to connect with customers and lead your employees by example.

In this day in age, New York Times columnist David Carr writes, "the modern chief executive lives behind a wall of communications operatives, many of whom ladle out slop meant to obscure rather than reveal." Twitter, he says, "has the potential to cut past all that clutter."

For Rupert Murdoch, Edward Barr, and the Wall Street Journal, that was certainly the case, at least for a brief moment. Both Barr and the Journal declined to comment for this story, though the latter did reveal a brief coda: Barr was, in fact, contacted by a real customer service rep. And hopefully his paper arrived on time this morning.

Are Car Loans a Good Idea in the Current Economic ... - Finance Buzz

It?s impossible to provide a blanket answer for the question above because every situation is different and a loan may be a great idea for one person and a potential disaster for another. If you?re thinking of taking a loan out, whether it is to do home improvements, buy a car, move house or take a holiday, or simply just to pay off bills and consolidate some debt, it is definitely worth taking time to mull over your financial situation and weigh up the options.

Why a car loan is not a good idea

If you want a new car the idea of spreading the cost could force you to choose something which is realistically beyond your means. If you only had the option of buying a car outright, you would be limited by your bank balance, but if you can take a loan out or spread the cost via a finance deal, this means you can spend more. If you are already in debt and struggling to keep on top of your outgoings, adding a car loan repayment to the mix is not a good idea.

If you are going to take out a loan, ensure that you can afford the repayments before you sign on the dotted line and be realistic when you are calculating your budget. Remember that a car comes with a host of additional costs, including tax, MOT and insurance, as well as maintenance costs, which can spiral into the thousands.

Unfortunately, there are companies which prey on vulnerable people. Always check that your loan provider is approved and legitimate and shop around for deals to ensure you get the best rate. Seeing a financial adviser is always a good idea, even if you think you know all there is to know about loans and lending.

Why a car loan is a good idea

If you have a good credit rating and a secure income and you need a car and want to own it outright rather than paying for it monthly, now is probably a good time to take out a loan. Although it is harder to get a loan, the cost of borrowing is currently very low, with interest rates at rock-bottom and if your job is secure and you can afford the loan repayment, it is likely that the car will represent a good investment in the years to come.

If you are interested in getting a loan, shop around online with companies such as Car Loan 4U. There are so many providers around and they all offer different payment plans, interest rates and perks. You can use Internet to get a general idea of what you get for your money, but the most apt solution is to visit a financial adviser. They can advise you which loan is best based on your financial situation and the amount you want to spend.

Please take care

When taking out car finance, no matter how big or small, it is wise to air on the side of caution. Always read the small print, make sure you know exactly what the loan will mean for your monthly outgoings and ensure that you choose a legitimate provider. It sounds obvious but if you come across a deal that seems to be too good to be true, it probably is just that. Use providers you have heard of, such as the major building societies and take the advice of trained financial advisors. If you are going to get a loan secured against your home, be particularly careful, as there is a risk that your home could be repossessed if you do not maintain repayments.

German parliament approves pre-election cut in pension dues

BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany's lower house of parliament approved a controversial cut in state pension contributions on Thursday, a move that could deliver economic stimulus of more than 6 billion euros annually.

With one year to go until Germany holds a federal election, Chancellor Angela Merkel's government is considering a raft of measures to ease the burden on taxpayers, a luxury it can afford because of booming tax revenues and still-robust growth.

But opposition parties have dismissed the steps as irresponsible pre-election gifts that Germany's ageing population cannot afford.

The Bundestag also agreed to raise the amount employees can earn in low-income, state-subsidized so-called "mini-jobs", by 50 euros to 450 euros. That step is likely to cost the state another 300 million euros a year.

Both measures have yet to pass through the Bundesrat upper house of parliament, where Merkel's coalition no longer has a majority and which earlier this year blocked a government plan to provide 6 billion euros of tax relief.

Even as its euro zone peers struggle with austerity measures and rising joblessness, Germany has seen unemployment drop to its lowest rate since reunification and wages rise, enabling it to reduce its debt more quickly than expected.

Leaders worldwide have called upon Germany to do more to stimulate its own economy and thereby that of the euro zone, but Berlin has been cautious about undertaking any large tax cuts, a step that many Germans see as irresponsible in the light of the debt crisis.

Nonetheless, Merkel has a federal election to fight in 2013, and her government has taken small steps to stimulate the economy. One of these is the plan, passed by the Bundestag on Thursday, to cut contributions to the state pension scheme to 18.9 percent from 19.6 percent.

Malaria transmission peaks at much cooler temperatures than previously predicted

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? The most deadly type of malaria in humans and the one most prevalent in Africa is one that is very sensitive to climate. Previously published scientific studies put the optimal temperature for malaria transmission from mosquitos to humans at 31 degrees C (88 degrees F), but according to a new mathematical model, the temperature for peak transmission of the parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, is much, much lower.

"Clarifying the response of malaria transmission to temperature helps us anticipate how climate change might affect disease risk," says U.S. Geological Survey parasite ecologist and senior author Kevin Lafferty.

"This study has discovered important new temperature thresholds that govern the relationship between humans and insect-borne parasites in the environment," said USGS Director Marcia McNutt. "With hundreds of millions of cases of malaria reported in the tropics and subtropics each year, each new scientific finding brings us closer to more effectively combating this deadly disease."

The new research shows that malaria transmission is predicted to peak at 25 degrees C (77 degrees F), and dramatically decrease above 28 degrees C (82 degrees F). The model, based on mosquito thermal physiology, incorporated published data from laboratory experiments on mosquitoes. Unlike previous models, the new model fits observations of malaria transmission in Africa very well.

Erin Mordecai, Lafferty's doctoral student at University of California, Santa Barbara, was the lead author of USGS -led study, published in the journal Ecology Letters. Coauthors include other scientists from UCSB, Pennsylvania State University, University of Chicago, University of California, Los Angeles, and State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

"We are really excited about the new findings, because they tell us temperatures as low as 82 degrees F may begin to slow malaria transmission," says Mordecai. "This study challenges the common assumption that hot temperatures simply speed up transmission."

Malaria parasites are transmitted to humans via certain mosquito species. The new mathematical model accounts for the fact that both mosquitoes and parasites suffer under high temperatures. Previously published models typically assumed that mosquito and malaria vitality continue to increase linearly with temperature.

To build their model, Mordecai and the research team reviewed laboratory studies that tracked the vitality and activity of malaria parasites and mosquitoes from low to high temperatures.

Lafferty, who holds joint appointments with UCSB and the USGS Western Ecological Research Center, hopes the findings will encourage more detailed studies on how malaria parasites and their mosquito vectors behave in the field.

"Predictive models are only as good as the data used to build them, and even ours has limitations," says coauthor Krijn Paaijmans of Penn State. "Oddly, there is little data on the response of mosquito species to temperature. Better laboratory studies and field ecology research will inform community health projects, and help them anticipate geographic shifts and seasonal shifts in malaria transmission risk."

Sadie Ryan of SUNY-ESF added, "Looking to the future, we are now using our model to build maps of the current and potential future spatial distribution of optimal conditions for malaria transmission."

The research was conducted as part of the Malaria and Climate Change Working Group supported by the Luce Environmental Science to Solutions Fellowship and the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis. NCEAS is supported by the National Science Foundation, UCSB and the State of California. Additional support came from NSF, USGS and the UCSB Michael J. Connell Trust.

Wine and fracking don't mix, say vineyard owners

The hillside vineyards of New York's Finger Lakes region make money producing fine Rieslings and inviting tourists to sip white wine by the water's edge. Now winery owners are worried about the prospect of a grittier kind of economic development: gas drilling.

Some grape growers fear that if shale gas drilling, or fracking, is allowed in this region of postcard-perfect hills and crystal-clear lakes, the muddy well sites and rumbling trucks will not only endanger the environment but threaten the Finger Lakes' reputation for pristine beauty.

In their view, wine does not pair well with drilling.

"If they allow hydro-fracking anywhere near us, tourism will be over and the industry will be done," said Art Hunt of Hunt Country Vineyards near Keuka Lake, N.Y.

Hunt owns one of the roughly 100 wineries that dot the gently sloping hills around the Finger Lakes, which has a grape-friendly micro-climate created by the deep, slender, hill-framed waters.

The upstate wine region about 200 miles northwest of New York City does not have the cachet of California's famous valleys, but it has garnered a global reputation over the past decade for its Rieslings. Many of the wineries are small operations and depend heavily on business from tourists who make their way from vineyard to vineyard along the scenic roads.

One prominent winery, Dr. Konstantin Frank Vinifera Wine Cellars near Keuka Lake, averages 70,000 visitors a year. Dr. Frank was a World War II refugee from the Ukraine who brought the Finger Lakes into the modern era by successfully cultivating vinifera grapes in a region where winter temperatures commonly drop to 15 below zero.

His grandson Fred Frank worries the region's carefully tended reputation will be in danger if tourists who make the long trip up from the New York City area and elsewhere have to deal with traffic created by gas drilling.

"If they're in on traffic coming up a steep hill behind two or three tanker trucks crawling around at 5 mph, they're perhaps less likely to come back," Frank said.

The Finger Lakes sit atop the Utica shale formation and on the northern fringe of the Marcellus Shale formation, which is being tapped just across the state line in Pennsylvania through hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. The process involves the injection of massive amounts of chemically treated water into wells and is denounced by many environmentalists as a danger to drinking water supplies.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo's administration is reviewing the environmental and health effects of fracking and will decide whether it can go forward in New York. It is unclear how long the review will take.

Fracking is a polarizing issue that pits residents eager for new economic activity in a job-hungry region against those with environmental concerns. More than 110 upstate New York municipalities have passed moratoriums or outright bans on gas drilling.

The sweet spot for fracking in New York is south of many Finger Lakes wineries, and some of them would be protected by local bans. But winery operators say an entire lake could be polluted with one spill of chemical-laden water. They say that would create not only an environmental hazard, but a public relations nightmare.

"If the drilling does come to the Finger Lakes, what I can see happening in a heartbeat given a couple of accidents, all of the sudden the consumers are going to say, 'Are your vineyards near any wells?'" said Peter Saltonstall of King Ferry Winery by Cayuga Lake. "If people start thinking something is wrong with it, then we are sunk. That's something I stay up nights and worry about."

The advocacy group New Yorkers Against Fracking lists dozens of Finger Lakes wineries that want fracking banned.

A spokesman for the Independent Oil and Gas Association of New York, a trade group, said fears of a forest of rigs and roads choked with trucks are unfounded. The buildup in New York is expected to be slow, wells will be spaced far apart, and water used in the process will be drawn from nearby ponds, lakes and streams when possible, instead of being brought in by truck, spokesman Jim Smith said.

"The industry and tourism in general have coexisted very well in New York, and our expectation is that it will continue to do so and that when we look back on this, the tourism industry will see this as a benefit to their business," Smith said.

Allied with the drilling companies are hundreds of residents looking forward to new jobs or big profits from leasing their land to drillers. Some farmers are among those who would welcome the economic jolt.

"The drilling operation is temporary and then all there is is a pad and pipe sticking out of the ground," said Gerald Urda, who grows organic vegetables and fruit, including grapes, southeast of the Finger Lakes in Windsor, N.Y. "I think the two can coexist. It's not going to be drilling forever, and it's not going to be the whole area at once."

In Need Of Some Helpful Internet Marketing Advice? Take These ...

As more people have gained access to the Internet, online advertising has become more important than ever. If you would like to give it a try, the information in this article could help you. Utilize them in addition to your current marketing plan.

?Guarantee? is a great word to use in internet marketing. Customers want to feel safe when purchasing products and, by having a guarantee policy in effect, it will ease their minds. The guarantees that you offer can be different, depending on the product you are selling. A 90-day or lifetime guarantee would work. Depending on the quality of your product, you should choose the guarantee that will provide confidence without destroying your profits.

It can be hard to decide how to keep your website going. Deduce your choices into one winning strategy. The niche you choose should be something with which you are comfortable and that you enjoy. Marketing your site is easier if you have a target.

Use ?guaranteed? in your ads and content to help boost your internet marketing strategy. The value of a guarantee varies greatly depending on the company offering it, but the mere offer of a guarantee seem to allay many concerns. Everyone works for their money, so they want to be certain that what they are purchasing isn?t going to just be money down the drain.

A good way to promote your products online is to offer discounts. Show the discount price alongside the product?s original selling price for comparison. One more example of this concept is to state ?Instead of paying $45, if you order now, you pay only $25?.

There are many free marketing resources for people who cannot afford consultants. Some examples including attending local conferences and workshops on business development, participating in online business forums, finding e-books on the subject and reading blogs about marketing.

With Internet marketing, as with traditional marketing, it is important to use a variety of methods if you want success. This point is key when first starting out, as it is difficult to get the momentum of a steady flow of income going. So never give up a stable job unless you are certain this new job can be profitable.

Try creating a web page for public relationships to help out your business?s marketing. Try to target your audience with articles that may be seen in magazines and newspapers. It is a simple, yet very effective, strategy to generate more publicity for your business.
