Small tornado struck southern Indiana town

ELIZABETH, Ind. ? The National Weather Service says a small tornado touched down overnight in a small southern Indiana town near the Ohio River.

A survey crew from the weather service?s Louisville, Ky., office confirmed that an EF-O tornado touched down in the Harrison County town of Elizabeth about 3 a.m. Wednesday. Meteorologist Mike Callahan said the tornado packed winds up to 80 mph as it cut a half-mile track through the area.

Elizabeth resident Teresa Campbell told WLKY-TV (http://bit.ly/11fH2mI) the tornado heavily damaged a barn and old school house on her property and stripped shingles from her home.

Neighbor Matt Marion said the tornado ?sounded like a big vacuum cleaner.?

Callahan said crews were also assessing reported tornado touchdowns near Salem in Washington County and the Orange County town of Prospect.

Ethics of talking shit about bad people and companies - ShoeMoney ...

If you have read my autobiography I give a ton of examples how I do what others are willing not to do.

I also talk about how I feel its my duty to share my experiences with companies that I feel are evil. ?Sometimes even criminal.

I call them out by name. ?You can see peoples names on the bottom right. ?As you read them you will notice that I don?t tell you if you should do business with them or not I simply share my experience with them.

Let me give you an example.

Rohail recently made a post titled How I lost 15,000 in a week. ? Its a post about how he got conned into working with this shitty company who managed a campaign for him and lost him a bunch of money. ?We have all been there so no shame in that. ?I was disappointed that Rohail did not give them name in the company.

So now at the next Affiliate Summit when I (or others) talk to Rohail about an experience I had where a company cost me a lot of money. ?Then he reveals that it was this company that he wrote about. ?How shitty is he going to feel that if he would have shared his experience he could have saved a lot of his friends money?

I can?t tell you the amount of people that have thanked me for sharing my experiences with companies.

I understand some people think its bad karma to do so or the possible legal ramifications are just not worth it. ?And I am not going to lie I have had legal ramifications. ?But since everything I wrote was 100% fact then not much they can do. ?And the LAST thing one of these companies want (IMO) is to have public documents stating all of these facts.

Anyway again I don?t mean to pick on Rohail. ?He is a good guy. Its just the latest example I came across.

90% Lincoln

All Critics (221) | Top Critics (43) | Fresh (199) | Rotten (22)

It's the most remarkable movie Steven Spielberg has made in quite a spell, and one of the things that makes it remarkable is how it fulfills those expectations by simultaneously ignoring and transcending them.

Lincoln paints a powerful and compelling portrait of the man who has become an icon. We don't need to see more of his life to understand how rare a figure he was - this window is more than sufficient.

Lincoln offers proof of what magic can happen when an actor falls in love with his character. Because as great as Day-Lewis has been in his many parts, he has never seemed quite so smitten.

The film masterfully captures the dual dilemmas facing the president in the final months of his life: how to bring the war between the states to an end, and how to eradicate slavery, once and for all.

Lincoln is a stirring reminder that politics can be noble. Might there be a lesson here for today's shrill D.C. discourse? 'Tis a consummation devoutly to be wished.

Day-Lewis' voice is thin and reedy, which jibes with historical accounts but subverts our expectations. His attitude makes listeners lean in, and so do we, magnetized by his kindly reserve.

A shamelessly hagiographic chronicling of the final months of the Great Emancipator's life.

It may indulge its subject a little too much but it highlights the road to a momentous occasion with an intimacy that gives emotional weight to political machinations

The actual vote on the Amendment proves surprisingly gripping, but elsewhere moments of piety and sentimentality undermine Day-Lewis's magnificent, credibly flesh-and-blood Lincoln.

It's an impeccably crafted history lesson that, unusually for a Spielberg film, tells us why its subject matter is important, instead of engaging with it on an emotional level.

Daniel Day-Lewis gives a towering performance in Steven Spielberg's bravest picture to date.

N?o ? um retrato multidimensional de um indiv?duo complexo, mas uma f?bula. Um letreiro de "Era uma vez..." em seu in?cio n?o ficaria deslocado.

Against the odds, Spielberg makes something genuinely exciting of the backstage wheedling.

A historic epic from Steven Spielberg carries a lot of baggage, but he surprises us with a remarkably contained approach to an iconic figure. What's most unexpected is that this is a political drama, not a biopic.

[Spielberg is] a man on a mission. And his not so secret weapon is Day-Lewis, an actor so charismatic it's hard to think clearly while he's on screen.

Perhaps this is a rose-tinted view of Lincoln - he comes across as more living saint than man - but as cinema, it is powerful, gripping and thoroughly entertaining.

Spielberg is always a professional, and the film is never less than well-crafted.

By stepping into history without fear, favour or any overfamiliar biopic folly, Lincoln, handsome, often thrilling, and movingly human, goes into history as a major movie achievement.

A rousing, rigorous and morally complex legal procedural more than a trad biopic. And all the better for it.

his is a warm, celebratory film, handsomely shot, with a subtle, sympathetic central performance from Day-Lewis, and tremendous support from Tommy Lee Jones ...

Spielberg's plodding camera endlessly tracks and circles Day-Lewis in complete reverence, while veteran composer John Williams delivers yet another repetitive Jurassic Extra-Terrestrial score.

What a feat from Day-Lewis: the nearest thing a 21st-century biopic can get to a seance.

It's tiresome to describe Day-Lewis as brilliant, so let's push the boat out: his Lincoln is absolutely wonderful.

A thoughtful and thought-proving picture.

Lincoln reminds you how little has actually changed in one-and-a-half centuries - presidents still have to worry about the war dead while trying to create a better life for the fractured living.

Impressively directed and superbly written, this is an absorbing and enjoyable political drama with an Oscar-worthy central performance from Daniel Day-Lewis.

Effects of Worst Satellite Breakups in History Still Felt Today

The anniversaries of two major space junk events ? China's anti-satellite test on Jan. 11, 2007, and the destructive fender-bender between a defunct Soviet Union-era satellite with an operating U.S. spacecraft on Feb. 10, 2009 ? are receiving special attention in orbital debris circles.

The Chinese anti-satellite test?merited a nod by the Air Force Space Command (AFSPC) Public Affairs Office from Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado, labeling it an "Anniversary Milestone: Satellite Shootdown."

The Jan. 11 AFSPC release noted that the Chinese military used a ground-based missile to hit and destroy its aging Fengyun-1C weather satellite, which was orbiting more than 500 miles (805 kilometers) in space back in 2007.

"The test raised concerns about the vulnerability of U.S. satellites and a possible arms race in space," the press release stated.

The anti-satellite test created more than 100,000 pieces of debris orbiting the planet, with about 2,600 of them more than 4 inches (10 centimeters) across, according to a NASA estimate.

"We carefully monitor those and the thousands of other bits of orbital debris to help provide for safe passage for those who traverse those orbits," the AFSPC statement concluded. [Worst Space Debris Events of All Time]

Debris count

Similarly, NASA's "The Orbital Debris Quarterly News," a publication of the NASA Orbital Debris Program Office, spotlighted the two anniversaries in its January issue: China's ASAT test, as well as the upcoming fourth anniversary of the smashup between Russia's circa-1960s Cosmos 2251 spacecraft and the U.S. Iridium 33 communications satellite.

"The beginning of the year 2013 marks the sixth anniversary of the destruction of the Fengyun-1C (FY-1C) weather satellite as the result of an anti-satellite test conducted by China in January of 2007 and the fourth anniversary of the accidental collision between Cosmos 2251 and the operational Iridium 33 in February of 2009," the newsletter reported, adding, "These two events represent the worst satellite breakups in history."

Altogether, the space junk created by these two events accounted for more than a third of the total cataloged satellite population in low-Earth orbit (LEO), where approximately 500 operational spacecraft reside or transit daily.

According to the NASA orbital debris office, a total of 5,579 fragments have been cataloged by the U.S. Space Surveillance Network (SSN) ? a worldwide network of space surveillance radar and optical telescopes, both military and civilian ? to observe the objects. Almost 5,000 of them still remain in orbit as of January 2013.

Changing the landscape

In addition to these cataloged objects, hundreds of thousands or more pieces of space litter, down to approximately a millimeter in size, were also generated during the breakups. These fragments are too tiny to be tracked by the SSN, but still large enough to be a safety concern for human space activities and robotic missions in low-Earth orbit ? the region below 1,243 miles (2,000 km) altitude.

"Just like their cataloged siblings, many of them remain in orbit today. These two breakup events dramatically changed the landscape of the orbital debris environment in LEO," according to the NASA newsletter.

China's ASAT destruction of FY-1C and the mess produced, along with the Iridium 33 and Cosmos 2251 fragments, "will continue to be felt for decades to come," the newsletter points out.

In general, the Iridium 33 and Cosmos 2251 fragments will decay (in other words, be destroyed by falling through Earth's atmosphere) faster than the FY-1C fragments because of their lower altitudes. In the case of Iridium 33, that shorter lifetime is caused by the lightweight composite materials that were extensively used in the fabrication of the Iridium spacecraft.

Solar cycling

The enormous amounts of debris churned up by the fragmentations of Fengyun 1C, Cosmos 2251 and Iridium 33 will also be affected by our sun's 11-year cycle of activity, which is currently in what's called Solar Cycle 24, experts say.

Increased solar activity heats the Earth's atmosphere, causing it to expand. That expansion increases the density of the atmosphere at any given altitude. This, in turn, increases drag on space junk, as well as satellites, causing these objects to fall back to Earth more quickly.

By mid-2012, more than 570 (10 percent) of the cataloged debris from the ASAT test and the satellite collision had already fallen out of orbit and with an increasing rate. Many of the remaining cataloged bits of debris had also noticeably experienced the effects of atmospheric drag.

NASA predicts that Solar Cycle 24 will peak in early or mid-2013.

Future forecasting

However, Nicholas Johnson, chief scientist for orbital debris at the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, said the peak in solar activity expected in 2013 might be the lowest in 100 years.

"Hence, far fewer debris, both large and small, will fall back to Earth compared with a more normal solar cycle. This comes at a time of a record number of known orbital objects," Johnson said. "If solar activity does not return to normal levels during the next solar cycle (Solar Cycle 25), the rate of growth of the Earth orbital population will increase more rapidly than most forecasts now anticipate," he reported at last year's 63rd International Astronautical Congress in Naples, Italy.

Johnson also noted that by the end of Cycle 24 (estimated to come around 2020), about one-third of all debris from the two breakup events might have re-entered, depending upon the peak and duration of the forthcoming solar maximum.

Help Fund a Documentary About Tim Burton's Lost Superman Movie

Superman Lives Documentary

I'd almost forgotten that Nicolas Cage was once slated to star as Superman in the Tim Burton-directed Superman Lives, but now I want to be reminded of every bizarre detail. ?With Zack Snyder's Man of Steel?looking like it will give Warner's Superman franchise the dramatic heft and substance of Christopher Nolan's?Dark Knight trilogy, The Venture Bros. director Jon Schnepp wants to take us back to a much cheesier time in Superman's history with a documentary about what he says could have been "the weirdest Superman movie ever made."

Superman Lives DocumentarySchnepp, who's also worked on the Adult Swim cartoon Metalocalypse and directed the W is for WTF segment of The ABCs of Death, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise $98,000 to shoot a documentary he's calling The Death of "Superman Lives": What Happened? ?Back in the late 1990s,?Peter Guber and Jon Peters the producers behind Warner Bros. first Batman features, Batman and Batman Returns, came close to shooting Superman Lives, ?a movie based on the 1992 DC Comics storyline, The Death of Superman. The movie never happened and, apparently, the moviegoers and comics geeks were robbed of the cinematic equivalent of a Velveeta-filled hot-tub romp.

Schnepp, who's been collecting production art and gathering string on this unmaking-of story for a while now, claims on his Kickstarter pitch page that had the project been made, it "would have stood the test of time and become a bonafide Cult Classic." Certainly, it had an enthusiastic star in Cage, whose Superman love was such that, in 2005, he gave his newborn son Superman's Kryptonian handle, Kal-El, for a name. (God, I hope it's been shortened to just Kal, by now.)

Here's Schnepp's rationale for making the documentary:

I?ve been interested in this film since it was first announced back in the late 90?s. Nicolas Cage was announced as Superman, Kevin Smith was announced as the Writer, Tim Burton was announced as the Director, and fans have had very heavy opinions, both positive and negative, on all of this. As news slowly bubbled out, news buzzed around about Rainbow Robot Outfits, Brainiac Skull ships, Superman not "flying", Fighting a Giant Spider, Polar Bears guarding the Fortress of Solitude. It all sounded so crazy, so weird, so different, that I honestly was hoping that they would actually make it, just so we would have something different from what had come before. It never happened. Cut to almost 15 years later, and I really wish I could slap that ?Superman Lives? disc into my player, and watch this guaranteed weird, strange, and original new take on the mythology of the Superman character. By this time, whether it was a success or failure at the box office, It would have for sure been a cult classic, due mainly to its inspired casting, and its tremendous bravery in it?s attempt to merge toy sales with the weirdness.

Schnepp is also hoping to raise an additional $50,000 for his "stretch goal" : actually shooting some of the key scenes from the Superman Lives scripts. (Wesley Strick, who wrote Martin Scorsese's remake of Cape Fear, was brought in after Smith.)

Below is Schnepp's pitch video, in which he says that the "weirdness level" of Superman Lives "beats any superhero movie ever made." As Larry David might say, that sounds like a pretty, pretty good argument to make this documentary.

And if you're doubting Schnepp, here's a YouTube clip of the ?Superman Lives suit, which is a like a rave light show that you wear.

Egypt's Morsi declares emergency in 3 provinces

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's president declared on Sunday a 30-day state of emergency and night curfew in the three Suez Canal provinces hit hardest by the wave of violence that has left more than 50 dead in three days.

Angry and almost screaming, Mohammed Morsi vowed in a televised address that he would not hesitate to take even more action to stem the latest eruption of violence across much of the country.

But at the same time, he sought to reassure Egyptians that his latest moves would not plunge the country back into authoritarianism.

"There is no going back on freedom, democracy and the supremacy of the law," he said.

The three provinces are Port Said, Ismailiya and Suez and the curfew, also for a month, is effective 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The worst violence this weekend was in the Mediterranean coastal city of Port Said, where at least 44 people died in two days of clashes there that began on Saturday. The spark was a court conviction and death sentence for 21 defendants involved in a mass soccer riot in the city's main stadium on Feb. 1, 2012 that left 74 dead.

Most of those sentenced to death were local soccer fans from Port Said, deepening a sense of persecution that Port Said's residents have felt since the stadium disaster, the worst soccer violence ever in Egypt.

At least another 11 died on Friday elsewhere in the country during rallies marking the second anniversary of the uprising that toppled authoritarian President Hosni Mubarak. Protesters used the occasion to renounce Morsi and his Islamic fundamentalist group, the Muslim Brotherhood, which emerged as the country's most dominant political force after Mubarak's ouster.

Morsi, in office since June, also invited the nation's political forces to a dialogue starting Monday to resolve the country's latest crisis.

The predominantly secular and liberal opposition has in the past declined Morsi's offers of dialogue, arguing that he must first show a political will to meet some of its demands.

There was no official reaction to Morsi's moves by the National Salvation Front, an umbrella for the main opposition parties. Some opposition figures, however, told TV talk shows that they would take part in the dialogue but only if it is run by independent third parties and if they receive assurances that its outcome would be binding on everyone.

Morsi did not say what he plans to do to stem the violence in other parts of the country, but he pointed out that he had instructed the police to deal "firmly and forcefully" with individuals attacking state institutions, using firearms to "terrorize" citizens or blocking roads and railway lines.

There were also clashes Sunday in Cairo and several cities in the Nile Delta region, including the industrial city of Mahallah.

Egypt's current crisis is the second to hit the country since November, when Morsi issued decrees, since rescinded, that gave him nearly unlimited powers and placed him above any oversight, including by the judiciary.

NRF sees slower sales growth in 2013

(Reuters) - Retail sales should rise 3.4 percent this year, down from 4.2 percent growth in 2012, as higher payroll taxes cut into discretionary spending for consumers, the world's largest retail trade association said on Monday.

The National Retail Federation forecast includes sales at most traditional retail categories including non-store, auto parts and accessories stores, discounters, department stores, grocery stores, and specialty stores, and excludes sales at automotive dealers, gasoline stations, and restaurants.

FTM2012 Synchronization Frequently Take in Excess of Two Hours ...

I just suffered through yet another 2+ hour synchronization time after making minimal updates that affected 81 changes to 40 persons in my medium-sized tree of 15,000 persons.

These 2+ hour synchronization times began only after the most recent patch was applied to FTM2012 a couple of months ago.

More than 60% of this synchronization time is consumed with FTM2012 searching itself for changes, the remaining 40% or so is spent uploading and verifying the changes.

It does not happen during every synchronization, nor does it happen during every synchronization following changes made in FTM2012. It appears to happen only after changes are made to Place Names (such as after resolving place names) or after changes to date fields (such as Merging Duplicate Events). An example of a date change resulting from merging duplicate events would be merging the 4 individual event entries created when adding the 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 censuses of a person who lived at the same address in all of these years into one single entry with a date range of "Bet 1900 and 1930", that FTM2012 automatically converts without user control to "Bet. 1900?1940" (using a period and the long dash).

At one point, I realized that FTM2012 was not actually searching itself for changes, it was making changes that I had not specifically authorized the program to make. It was changing other date ranges enter as "Bet xxxx and yyyy" it encountered to the aforementioned format. The result was that after I made a couple of changes the synch dialog window showed a couple of thousand changes to 800+ profiles. These now "corrupted" date changes it made were subsequently uploaded to Ancestry, where they cannot be properly displayed because Ancestry does not recognize the date format that includes a period (".") and the long dash ("?").

This has become a regular occurrence, with data regularly "corrupted" into the incompatible format it wants to see. The frequency is difficult to quantify as every X synchronizations.

During these 2+ hour synch times, needless to say, I am unable to do any genealogy, because FTM2012 does not use a scheme of simply locking the records it sees changes in, it locks the entire Ancestry Member Tree and FTM2012 itself.

I have sent several reports of this issue to 2nd level technical support, with supporting screenshots and SynchErrorLog data. To date, there is no response on the issue.

This is happening far too frequently. The most recent occurred after a fresh reboot of my computer, eliminating and memory issues from the equation.

The purpose of this posting is to see if others are encountering similar problems, not to solicit or receive support from users unaffected by the issue, because I doubt that all users are encountering the issue.

FELLOW FTM2012 USERS -- PLEASE!

In the absence of a board moderator, show a little courtesy and common sense. If your issue is not directly related to the problem posted here, don't pollute this thread with reports -- or rantings -- about unrelated issues you have. Putting unrelated issues in this thread does nothing to highlight your issue and buries this one.

African leaders meet in Ethiopia amid Mali crisis

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) ? African leaders met in the Ethiopian capital Sunday for talks dominated by the conflict in Mali as well as lingering territorial issues between the two Sudans.

The African Union says it will deploy a force in Mali, where French troops are helping the Malian army to push back Islamist extremists whose rebellion threatens to divide the West African nation.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is attending the two-day summit in Addis Ababa, where Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn took over from President Yayi Boni of Benin as chairperson of the African Union.

"We are determined to do what we can to help the people of Mali in their time of need," Ban said. "Humanitarian agencies are helping suffering civilians. The United Nations has also sent specialists on the military and political tracks. This is a moral imperative for all in the international community. I have presented to the Security Council my recommendation on the logistics support package for (the Mali force)."

With Mali at the top of the agenda, African leaders hope they can make quick progress in deploying a substantial number of African troops there. As the African leaders met, French special forces fighting alongside Malian troops were pushing farther north into the Malian desert in an offensive against al Qaida-linked Islamists who took control of northern Mali more than nine months ago.

Africa's economic boom is threatened by violent conflicts across the continent, African Union officials said at the summit.

"While we are proud of the progress made in expanding and consolidating peace and security on the continent, we also acknowledge that much still needs to be done to resolve ongoing, renewed and new conflict situations in a number of countries," said African Union Commission Chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

Dlamini-Zuma said the Peace and Security Council of the African Union will report to the summit on efforts to resolve conflicts in countries ranging from Mali to Madagascar.

The Peace and Security Council of the African Union said in a statement Saturday that it wanted "the early operationalization of the African Standby Force" in Mali. The council also said it fully supports Mali President Dioncounda Traore but urged him to put in place a roadmap to free and fair elections. It also said the African Union is committed to preserving the unity of Mali and would "spare no efforts" to safeguard the country's territorial integrity.

A number of African countries have pledged to send troops to Mali, and on Tuesday the African Union will hold a conference of donors with hopes that money will be raised for the Mali force. The Peace and Security Council of the African Union urged member states to "seize the opportunity of the donors' conference ... to meaningfully contribute toward the mobilization of the necessary resources."

The council also urged the international community to contribute generously to the Mali force.

Meanwhile, the leaders of Sudan and South Sudan met at the summit in Addis Ababa, although African Union officials said they did not expect them to make much headway. South Sudan President Salva Kiir and Sudan President Omar al-Bashir earlier this month agreed to "the unconditional and speedy" implementation of deals they had reached back in September. But a subsequent meeting of the two countries' negotiating teams that should have outlined timetable for the deal's implementation ended in disagreement.

Ban urged the two Sudans to resume direct talks and spoke of the "dangerous humanitarian situation in Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile states."

"In Sudan and South Sudan the parties have taken positive steps to resolve outstanding issues," Ban said. "But they should make more progress in meeting their agreements."

Mediators led by former South African leader Thabo Mbeki have until July to push the two sides to agree on the status of the disputed Abyei region as well as other contested border areas.

Deadlines coming this week for fishers and hunters | Outdoors | The ...

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife's comment period on proposed changes to sport fishing regulations for 2013-14 closes Tuesday, Jan. 29.

The fish and wildlife commission is considering at least seven changes applying to Whatcom and Skagit County waters.

This rule-making process has its limits, covering the rules for recreational fishing for gamefish in freshwater, as well as some finfish and shellfish in marine waters. Rules and seasons for halibut and salmon for non-treaty anglers in Washington derive from separate processes in January and April.

For our neck of the woods in northern Region 4, under consideration are several new regulations that would restore angling opportunities lost when the so-called "new paradigm" for Puget Sound, northern inland waters and Strait of Juan de Fuca streams took effect three years ago.

My personal favorite is the proposed restoration of fishing in certain beaver ponds in Whatcom and Skagit counties. Proposal Number 41 will reopen beaver ponds if they are on or adjacent to streams otherwise open seasonally for trout (gamefish).

This conditional reprieve will see to the restoration of fishing for trout in some challenging but worthy waters such as the upper North Fork Nooksack river valley above Nooksack Falls and Baker river valley above Shannon Dam.

Other possible rule modifications for waters in this area contained in the package are:

? No. 47. Open most tributaries to Ross Lake to angling from one mile upstream of Ross Lake to headwaters (except Ruby Creek closed and its tributaries open) under certain restrictions.

? No. 46. Reduce waterfowl hunter/angler use conflicts on Fazon & Tennant Lakes by not allowing fishing from a floating device until Jan. 28, to coincide with the closing date of waterfowl hunting season.

? No. 50. Increase angling opportunity on the South Fork Nooksack River and all tributaries, upstream from and including Wanlick Creek under fly fishing only plus catch-and-release provisos.

? No. 53. Shorten fishing season on Channel Creek (Baker Lake) to protect spawning sockeye by changing to an Aug. 30 closure date.

? No. 54. Open a selective gear rules trout fishery in the lower Skagit River from the mouth to Highway 536 Memorial Bridge at Mount Vernon from March 1 through May 31 under certain controls.

? No. 55. Close angling on Hutchinson Creek to protect wild steelhead.

There are 62 other recommended changes for specific waters elsewhere around the state, in marine waters or with broader statewide implications or applications.

The way to get your message across is online, streamlined and highly convenient.

Simply go to http://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/regulations/rule_proposals/ and click on the link to get to the view and comment portal.

From there you call up each specific rule's page by clicking on the synopsis statement, and there is an e-form on which you can register and comment.

The Fish and Wildlife Commission will take formal testimony on all proposals at its February session, at which written comments also may be submitted.

Final decisions on all these changes will be made by the nine-member panel in March, when 2013-14 sport regulations are enacted.

These new rules will take on the force of law on May 1, 2013.

Starting in February the Fish and Wildlife Department and Western Washington treaty tribes formally begin the business of setting salmon seasons in a nearly three-month endeavor called the North of Falcon Process. This starts with a day-long announcement and discussion of 2013 salmon run forecasts, which usually takes place the first week of February.

We also are awaiting the announcement of the International Pacific Halibut Commission's determinations on 2013 allowable flattie harvests.

Catch allocations for discrete areas throughout the Northeast Pacific were made at the IPHC's annual meeting Jan. 21-25 in Victoria, B.C.

Those allotments will enable Washington fisheries managers to set by late March personal use seasons that usually occur in May and June.

DON'T FORGET

If you drew documents to hunt big game species and/or special waterfowl as well as dipped gear for Dungeness crab in the late season this past year, deadlines are approaching to report your efforts and success.

The end of January is the witching hour for deer, elk, black bear and turkey and crabbing reports. You must report hunting activity whether successful or not or the lack of any effort on each individual transport tag purchased.

Waterfowl gunners with special written authorizations to hunt sea-ducks anywhere, brant in Skagit County or snow geese in Goose Management Area 1 must report by Friday, Feb. 15.

Idaho non-resident deer and elk tags have been on sale since Dec. 1. Wyoming opened its application period for non-resident controlled hunts for big game species on Jan. 1.

Idaho is accepting applications for spring black bear hunt permits.

Veteran hunters visiting Wyoming should not wait for the usual booklet to arrive in the mail. Since most drawing transactions now occur online, Wyoming hunt managers have done away with the printed application booklet, and that may not be the only change in store for out-of-state hunters.

WINTER-RUN HATCHERY WATCH

The inter-basin transfer of hatchery winter-run steelhead eggs, to make up deficits if a hatchery does not get its needed spawners, is now prohibited, so it is more important than ever for enough adult fish to reach their artificial spawning destinations.

Under the state's steelhead management plan and individual hatchery genetics management plans, facilities must spawn the earliest returning adipose fin-clipped adults that return.

Hatchery fish must arrive in spawning facility traps by Jan. 31 to be eligible for breeding. Any marked fish arriving after that is not to be used for spawning - nor, under the state's hatchery genetic management plan, can wild fish (non-adipose clipped fish) under any circumstances be included in broodstock for spawning.

For more details in individual hatchery programs for winter-run steelhead, visit http://wdfw.wa.gov/hatcheries/hgmp/2002-2005_archive.html#pugetsound and http://wdfw.wa.gov/hatcheries/esa.html.

As of Thursday, Jan. 24, these are the numbers, reported by installation, of adult hatchery winter-run steelhead trapped as well as eggs already taken and other details:

Maritime Heritage Center Hatchery (Whatcom Creek): one adult reported, no eggs taken

Kendall Creek Hatchery (North Fork Nooksack River): 62 adults, 72,000 eggs taken (target 165,000 egg take)

Marblemount Hatchery (Cascade River, Skagit): 153 adults, 263,000 eggs taken (target 275,000 egg take)

Whitehorse Hatchery (North Fork Stillaguamish River): 126 adults, 227,890 eggs taken

Tokul Creek Hatchery (Snoqualmie River, Snohomish): 569 adults, 657,353 eggs taken

Soos Creek Hatchery (Green River): 77 adults, 108,000 eggs taken

Dungeness Hatchery (Dungeness River): 36 adults, 31,000 eggs taken

Bogachiel Hatchery (Bogachiel River, Quillayute): 1,930 adults, 306,000 eggs taken

Humptulips Hatchery (Humptulips River): 785 adults, 229,750 eggs taken

Forks Creek Hatchery (Willapa River): 587 adults, 200,000 eggs taken

Cowlitz Hatchery (Cowlitz River): 852 adults, no eggs taken

DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) ? Forget the endless debates about the euro or government debts. What does the future hold?

The World Economic Forum at Davos is always a showcase for new research, trends and ideas. Here's some predictions about the future from participants at the annual gathering of the world's elite:

WEATHER AND WATER

Climate change will lead to more and more extreme weather, which will cause tremendous economic upheaval, predicts New York University economist Nouriel Roubini.

"It's not just that New York is going to be underwater 30 years from now," he said, referring to the devastation caused last fall by Hurricane Sandy.

Oxford University physicist Tim Palmer ? who said as a scientist he preferred probabilities to prediction ? noted there is a 10- to 15-percent chance that the Earth will warm by 6 degrees Celsius within a century, leading to "catastrophic consequences for humanity" ranging from extreme weather to rising seas.

Vali Nasr, dean of the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University, said many countries will start running out of water in the coming years.

"Water is the new oil," he said.

A TECHNOLOGICAL SURGE

Laura Tyson, a business professor at the University of California at Berkeley, said one of the great concerns should be "the employment effects of technology," with so many jobs being rendered obsolete by scientific or technological advances.

Discussions of such advances were everywhere at Davos.

Sebastian Thrun, a computer science professor at Stanford University and leader of Google's Self-Driving Car Project, said he thinks Google co-founder Sergey Brin's prediction that within five years driverless cars will be on the streets used by regular people is going to happen.

"It'll be a while before they're going to be mainstream, and there'll be all kinds of interesting questions coming about security, privacy, safety of the system as a whole," Thrun said. "But if they are available within five years for general consumers, I think within 15 years you ought to be able to buy one of those."

MENTAL ILLNESS UNDERSTOOD

Edward Boyden, an associate professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who directs a neural engineering research group, says new technologies for analyzing the brain will produce significant advances in fighting mental illness.

"Right now we know that certain cell types in the brain are impaired in schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder or autism," he said.

If scientists can develop new technologies to image the brain and control the brain's cells, he said "over the next half-century or so we should be able to really understand how these networks" generate emotion.

Then, in the case of mental illness, "we can insert information into the cells in order to re-sculpt their dynamics and fix what's broken," Boyden said.

Technology entrepreneur Eric Anderson said biotechnology and medicine "are eventually going to be information sciences, with your genes... will determine treatment."

THE LIGHTEST STUFF

Julia Greer, an assistant professor of materials science and mechanics at the California Institute of Technology, says the world is craving a useful, ultra-superlight material to work with.

Her research group collaborated with Hughes Research Lab (HRL) and the University of California, Irvine, to recently develop the world's lightest solid material. She predicted that in 10 to 15 years it will be used as fuel cell catalysts, as acoustic damping devices on submarines, as anti-reflective layers in solar cells, and as components of vehicles sent into space.

The new material, called a micro-lattice, is made up of tiny hollow tubes of nickel-phosphorous that are angled to connect ? and contains 99 percent air, Greer said. It can also be used for high-temperature thermal batteries, heart stents and blood clot catchers, she said.

On a related topic, Roy Johnson, the chief technology officer for Lockheed Martin, predicted huge advances in 3-D printing.

POWER TO THE PEOPLE

One of the most famous predictions is Moore's Law, named after Intel co-founder Gordon Moore, which says that computing power doubles every two years or so. It has proven stunningly correct so far, putting new technological devices in everyone's pockets.

But how long will this law hold? Paul Jacobs, the CEO of Qualcomm, said it's not so certain anymore.

The implications of effectively infinite computing power are staggering ? no more waiting for a power-up or a download; every song, movie and TV episode instantly available; and even the possibility of what scientists call artificial intelligence.

But Jacobs told The Associated Press that the law might be valid only "a couple of more generations."

"I'm worried. In the next couple of nodes we're going to stop getting those numbers unless somebody figures out something," he said.

YOUTH OF THE WORLD UNITE

Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, now the U.N. special envoy for global education, said huge advances in the Internet and technology are enabling young people to connect with each other and "this is opening up the world in a way that has never happened before."

"Young people are beginning to see that the gap between the opportunities and rights they have been promised and the opportunities and rights that are delivered to them is wholly unacceptable," he said at a session on the forum's sidelines. "And the sense that they are being deprived of these opportunities and rights is, I think, going to be the big motivating force over the next few years."

Survey says ? the real/estate blog

Almost all real estate deals will come into my office with a provision for the seller to provide a survey. If you are selling, be careful: you don?t want to offer more than you have.

First, to be a survey, it must have a proper mark on it from a licenced surveyor. Many people produce plans of subdivision or reference plans, believing these to be surveys. They are not.

Second, be careful about what kind of survey you are agreeing to provide. ?A survey that shows the current location of all structures on the property? means that you have to provide a survey that shows the deck, pool, shed, and house. A pre-build survey that only shows the foundation will not do.

Third, be careful about providing a ?legible? survey. Often, you received a copy of a copy when you bought. If all of the numbers cannot be read, then you can?t provide what you have agreed to do.

Getting a new survey done can be quite expensive. Even if there is a record online where you could order a survey that was previously done, in order to provide a legible copy, could cost you several hundred dollars, depending on where it is ordered from. Before you sign on the line, be sure that you can actually provide what you are agreeing to. A real estate agreement is a binding contract, and what it says, rules.

Google's 4Q earnings rise 7 pct; stock rises

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Google's fourth-quarter earnings rose 7 percent as online advertisers spent more money in pursuit of holiday shoppers.

The financial results announced Tuesday were a mixed bag. While the company's earnings topped analyst estimates, an accounting quirk caused net revenue to fall below the projections that guide investor expectations.

Wall Street still liked what it saw. Google's stock climbed $30.78, or 4.4 percent, to $733.65 in extended trading.

The most recent quarter didn't provide an apples-to-apples comparison to the previous year because the latest results included Motorola Mobility. Google didn't own Motorola Mobility in 2011, having completed its $12.4 billion acquisition of the handset maker eight months ago.

Things were further complicated by Google's recent agreement to sell a part of the Motorola Mobility division that makes cable TV boxes. That division is now accounted for as a discontinued operation.

Google earned nearly $2.9 billion, or $8.62 cents per share during the final three months of last year. That compared to net income of $2.7 billion, or $8.22 per share, at the same time last year.

If not for the costs of employee stock compensation and certain other accounting items, Google said it would have earned. $10.65 per share. On that basis, Google exceeded the average earnings estimate of $10.54 among analysts surveyed by FactSet.

Revenue surged 36 percent from the previous year to $14.4 billion.

After subtracting advertising expenses, Google's revenue totaled $11.3 billion. That figure was well below the average analyst estimate of $12.1 billion, according to FactSet.

But many of the analyst forecasts included revenue from Motorola Mobility's set-top division, which Google didn't include in its fourth quarter revenue. Had the set-top division been included, Google's net revenue would have matched analyst estimates.

AMD hires chip experts from Qualcomm and Apple, aims to move beyond the PC

Even more transfer news from chipmakers, although this one isn't quite as litigious. AMD has hired two senior engineers with experience at both Qualcomm and Apple. The hires have been confirmed by AMD, which added that the new recruits would help the chipmaker expand into new markets -- though the spokesperson didn't specify what these markets would be. Charles Matar, with expertise in low-power and embedded chip design will join from Qualcomm as AMD's new vice president of SoC Development, while Wayne Meretsky, formerly of Apple, was named vice president of software IP development. AMD still derives around 80 percent of its revenue from PCs, a market that continues to slow as smartphones and tablets continue to flourish. Both will likely be involved in the development of whatever AMD's got planned for after Temash.

'Ridiculous' on this day: 5 shot on MLK Blvd. on MLK Day

By Jeff Black, Staff Writer, NBC News

Five people standing outside a grocery store on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in New Orleans were wounded in a drive-by shooting on Monday, police said.

None of the injuries was considered life-threatening, officials said.

The incident took place at the intersection of LaSalle Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, police said.

Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas, who was among those who responded to the scene, told NBC station WDSU that six teenage boys or young men were outside a small grocery when a late-model white sedan drove past, with shots fired from inside the car.

The car then sped off.

A New Orleans Police Department official told the station that a surveillance camera captured the incident and that video recordings were being reviewed.

The violence happened shortly after New Orleans' annual parade honoring slain civil rights activist and nonviolence standard-bearer Martin Luther King Jr. passed through the neighborhood.

The irony was not lost on police or residents.

"It's ridiculous this violence happened on this day," one witness told WDSU.

"It's the state of affairs in our nation that young men do not heed the words of Martin Luther King Jr.," Serpas told the Times-Picayune, which also reported that the shooting did not appear to be linked to the parade.

Wind power delivers too much to ignore

Although aesthetic concerns need to be heard, qualms about wind's reliability are wide of the mark, argues energy policy researcher Reg Platt

THE location of the British Isles at Europe's wild and windy western fringe does not always seem like a blessing. But in one important respect it is: the UK has the greatest potential for wind power, both onshore and offshore, of any European country.

Onshore wind power has expanded steadily across the UK in recent years and is a key plank of the country's commitment to greening its electricity supply. But as the turbines have gone up across the countryside, so has the level of opposition. Wind power has become a deeply divisive issue in British politics.

The issue exploded last year when 106 members of parliament, mostly Conservatives representing rural constituencies, signed a letter to Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron. They urged him to cut subsidies for the onshore wind industry, describing wind technology as "inefficient and intermittent".

Things escalated in the autumn when the recently appointed Conservative energy minister, John Hayes, told two newspapers that "enough is enough" and that no new onshore wind farms would be built. He was slapped down by his boss Edward Davey, the secretary of state for energy and climate change and a member of the Liberal Democrat party. But simmering tensions remain at the top level of the coalition government. Another Conservative, finance minister George Osborne, is known to be sympathetic to the anti-wind cause. Wind turbines also became an important point of contention between the parties in a recent by-election.

Two of the anti-wind campaigners' main concerns are the impact of turbines on the beauty of the countryside and the opposition of local people. It is absolutely right that these be taken into account. But they need to be balanced against the bulk of public opinion, which strongly supports the increased use of wind turbines.

Any misgivings must also be balanced against the important role that this technology can play for the UK, both in fulfilling its climate-change commitments and for future economic success.

Anti-wind campaigners frequently make claims about the shortcomings of wind power. Their main complaints are that the turbines are so inefficient that they actually increase carbon dioxide emissions, and so unreliable that they require constant backup from conventional coal and gas-fired stations.

If correct, these claims would be devastating to wind power. But they are not.

My organisation, the Institute for Public Policy Research, recently published a report tackling these questions. Our conclusions are unambiguous. Onshore wind power reduces carbon emissions and is a reliable source of electricity, at least up to the capacity of wind power that is forecast to be installed in the UK by 2020.

To answer the carbon question, we used a simple model of the UK electricity market. As demand increases, say on a weekday morning when people are waking up and getting ready to go to work, power plants increase output to meet it. Plants with the lowest marginal cost - that is, those that can produce additional electricity most cheaply - are selected first by the market. Here wind beats gas and coal, as no fuel is needed to generate electricity.

The upshot is that, in theory, adding wind power to the energy mix should displace coal and gas, and hence cut carbon. This is backed up by empirical data on emissions reductions from wind power in the US.

There is another way of looking at it. In 2011, wind energy contributed approximately 15.5 terawatt-hours of electricity to the UK. If this had been supplied by fossil fuels instead, CO2 emissions would have been at least 5.5 million tonnes higher, and as much as 12 million tonnes higher.

As for the important matter of reliability, the obvious worry is that because the wind does not always blow, the system will sometimes not be able to supply electricity when needed.

This seems like common sense. However, the reliability of wind power does not depend on the variability of wind. Instead, it depends on how well changes in wind power output can be anticipated.

Forecasts of wind farm output are increasingly accurate, and drops in output can be predicted and compensated for using conventional power stations. In any case, output is surprisingly stable across the country's entire network of wind farms: when the wind isn't blowing in one area, it usually is somewhere else. The relatively small changes that do occur are well within the capabilities of existing systems for balancing supply and demand on the grid.

Even when winter delivers a "long, cold, calm spell" with low temperatures and little wind, the system can cope. This was demonstrated by a two-week period in February 2010 in Ireland, a country that is much more reliant on wind than the UK. It coped perfectly well.

If the UK government caves into pressure and lowers its ambitions for onshore wind, it will make more expensive forms of low-carbon generation a necessity to hit the UK's target of producing 30 per cent of its electricity from renewables by 2020. The result will be even higher electricity bills.

Scaling back on wind would also be a lost opportunity. The natural resource at our disposal, combined with the UK's engineering heritage, could create significant economic growth and jobs.

The concerns of people who do not want wind power on their doorsteps need to be taken into account. We must also be sensitive to the need to preserve areas of natural beauty. But we should not sacrifice important opportunities because of the views of vocal minority groups and their unsubstantiated claims.

Reg Platt is a research fellow at the Institute for Public Policy Research, a think tank based in London

The 2013 Art House Convergence - Filmmaker Magazine

Each year, the owners and operators of America?s art house cinemas gather the week before the start of the Sundance Film Festival at a resort nestled in the mountains of Midway, UT. The Art House Convergence, this year celebrating its 6th anniversary, brings together theaters from all over the US and Canada to help foster the growth and viability of art house and independent cinemas. The Convergence, organized under the non-profit status of the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor, MI and chaired by the Michigan?s Executive Director, Russ Collins, has continued to grow over the past six years; what began as a meeting of 20 people in a basement in Salt Lake City has blossomed into one of the must-attend events for the independent film business. This year?s event, orchestrated under the banner of ?The Brave New Art House,? drew over 350 attendees, each facing an environment of intensifying change in the art house business and an uncertain future for the theatrical presentation of independent, international and non-fiction film in this country.

The presence of uncertainty was palpable throughout the Convergence, which added not only to its importance, but also provided a vibrant sense of community among delegates; there were no radical outliers in attendance. Instead, the commonality of concern and the need for information sharing and best practices only deepened the existing feeling that everyone was pulling in roughly the same direction. Throughout the panel discussions, meetings and meals, art house owners gave voice to significant concerns about the future of their business and, as an outsider attending for the first time, provided a clear picture of how changes in film technology and distribution will shape the theatrical landscape for the next few years.

Listening to attendees speak, it was clear that there has already been a near-complete resignation among art house owners that digital cinema has become the industry standard; nearly every theater in attendance had already or planned on making the conversion to digital cinema projection. But if the pace of change seemed remarkable, the multiplicity of digital cinema options and the pending obsolescence of every technology (including digital cinema projectors) gave me pause when considering how I, or any owner, might hedge their bets. On the one hand, DCP prints, delivered by mail on hard drives, seemed to be the industry standard, but with satellite delivery currently in limited practice and the long-term compatibility of digital cinema projectors, servers and hardware a cause for some concern, art house owners looking to convert would be excused if they didn?t splash big money on a single, comprehensive digital solution. Add in a series of revenue generating steps in the film presentation process, from DCP ?key? fees to virtual print fees designed to shift a portion of the cost of financing digital cinema conversion to distributors, and the range of options available to art houses seemed not only daunting, but almost impractical.

Instead of developing a single standard among the studios and digital cinema manufacturers, the industry seems to be using innovation as a way to drive the market forward. If it only took forward momentum to ensure the viability of the art house business, things would be in great shape, with 2K, 4K, 3D, 48fps and a host of other options pacing a period of incredible digital development. Unfortunately for the art houses, who must plan longterm capital campaigns (and, in some cases, highly effective Kickstarter campaigns), the pace of change is outstripping the ability of many to efficiently run their businesses. And yet, everyone seems desperate to do something, lest they be left behind by the ever-changing digital landscape. Most have made one decision or another, with a large number of art house theaters already having converted screens to digital cinema systems.

Ironically, one of the most prominent themes at this year?s Convergence was the return of old fashioned showmanship at the movie theaters. In an era when art house theaters are competing for the time and attention of younger audiences, several speakers harkened back to the days of vaudeville, when films and live performance blended together on a single bill. And so, facing a runaway train of digital possibilities, theaters were encouraged to maximize the human elements of the cinematic experience, drawing audiences in for special events and unique programs that featured a hybrid of projection and performance. Liesl Copeland of William Morris Entertainment even went so far as to push back against the received wisdom of so much of the art house movement by suggesting that a reverent environment for film screenings? phones off, technology disengaged ? might be set aside for some screenings in order to encourage consumers to use their digital devices to both access and promote the art house experience. The importance of audience growth and engagement was a constant theme throughout the Convergence; the figure was quoted more than once that, across the film industry, 80% of film tickets are purchased by 10% of ticket buyers, which only underscored the need to convert young people into ticket buying, cinema-loving patrons. Grow that 10% and the pie gets bigger for everyone.

But given the newest distribution models, many of which find films available on VOD or online prior to or simultaneous with their theatrical run, why would anyone, young or old, leave their couch for the art house? Looking at much of the data and testimonial evidence presented, there is a great deal of optimism that the experience of going to the movies will be around for a long time. In his brilliant closing address, Ira Deutchman, Managing Partner of Emerging Pictures and Chair of the Columbia University Film Program, gave a personal tour through the modern history of the art house, pulling from his vast experience to provide perspective on the modern art house environment. But after speaking about the past, Deutchman offered some interesting ideas about the day-and-date model for distribution, proposing that distributors should consider sacrificing week-long runs for films already in digital distribution channels, allowing art houses to re-create appointment viewing by once again exerting the exclusivity of the theatrical experience. So, instead of a film playing on VOD while simultaneously incubated in the local art house for 28 screenings a week, perhaps art houses could engage in a festival model of one or two days of screenings, with a much quicker rotation of their film calendars.

Finally, it was Deutchman who also reframed the competitive landscape for cinemas in a common sense idea that seemed to have unique ramifications for the business. If, indeed, 10% of the audience is buying 80% of the admissions, then perhaps the decision to see a film is not, in the end, about whether it is available at home or not, but rather about the attractiveness of the cinema as a consumer choice once the decision has been to leave the house for entertainment. Instead of competing against television and the internet, Deutchman proposed, art house cinemas are competing against bars, restaurants and other entertainment options. Thriving businesses like the Alamo Draft House Cinemas, which provide a unique entertainment experience, seem to suggest that this framework for competitive analysis is more than valid. And so, in the end, with consumers generally agnostic about digital cinema (as long as it works and the film is good) and always needing to, at some point, leave their homes and connect with their communities for an array of reasons, maybe the art house can thrive after all by sticking to its commitment to generating a new experience out of that communal, sacred space in the dark.
