Obama Gains Frosty Reputation In Washington

nytimes.com:

Mr. Obama, in general, does not go out of his way to play the glad-handing, ego-stroking presidential role. While he does sometimes offer a ride on Air Force One to a senator or member of Congress, more often than not, he keeps Congress and official Washington at arm's length, spending his down time with a small -- and shrinking -- inner circle of aides and old friends.

Apple?s November iPhone 4S launch led to 83 percent increase in app downloads over 2010 (Appolicious)

After releasing the iPhone 4S in November, Apple and its iTunes App Store saw a big jump in app downloads, rising 83 percent over the same period in 2010.

TechCrunch has the report, which states that app market research firm Fiksu measured the volume of app downloads for the top 200 free apps in the iTunes App Store. Fiksu found volume across all those apps increased by 15 percent from October 2011 to November 2011, and also saw that for the first time, free app downloads broke the 5 million-per-day mark, rising as high as 5.65 million downloads per day in November. October?s record high mark was 4.91 million downloads.

App downloads had been on the decline since around June, as GigaOM reports, in a trend attributed to iPhone owners waiting for the iPhone 4S to hit store shelves. Apple saw a similar decline in iPhone sales in the space between the device?s traditional launch window in the summer and the iPhone 4S? fall launch.

The new iPhone has been extremely popular to date in lots of different markets. Predictions have Apple selling 30 million more iPhones in the last quarter of 2011 than previously expected. Apple has been expanding extensively in places like China and South America to bring the iPhone to new customers, and as one might expect, when those new customers get a shiny new iPhone, they immediately download a lot of new apps.

Fiksu also put some of the blame for the spike in app downloads on the latest version of Apple?s iOS mobile operating system, iOS 5. Apple released the software just ahead of the iPhone 4S and it added a lot of new features, both for the new device and for existing iPhone versions. As a result, developers pushed a number of new updates for their apps during the same period, to add in new functionality like iCloud support. Many apps, especially games, were optimized to take advantage of the powerful new iPhone 4S, and as a result, lots of apps likely saw increases in popularity and a revival in downloads after the new OS?s launch.

As TechCrunch points out, the download spike shows that there?s still a whole lot of room to expand in the smartphone market. Among cellular phone owners in the U.S., smartphones account for only about 50 percent.?That's a high number on its own, but also remarkable because that means there?s the entire other half of the cell phone market that doesn?t have a smartphone but could, and would also be downloading apps but isn?t. The iPhone 4S likely converted quite a few of those feature phone owners, but the market is still pretty young and there?s huge room for growth.

7 hurt as bombers target Islamic school in Nigeria

Six children and a teacher were wounded when assailants threw a homemade bomb at an Islamic school in a predominantly Christian area, police in Nigeria said Wednesday.

The attack took place in the city of Sapele, as about 50 children were gathered for an Arabic class.

Delta State police spokesman Charles Muka said that the attackers drove by a school and threw homemade explosives into a classroom Tuesday morning.

The wounded children were all aged younger than nine, Reuters reported. At least one was aged four.

Investigators suspect a local vigilante group was behind the incident, Muka added.

The latest incident follows coordinated attacks by radical Islamist militants on Christmas Day, which killed at least 39 people.

Analysts say the attacks risk reviving sectarian violence between the mostly Muslim north and Christian south, which has claimed thousands of lives in the past decade.

The radical Muslim sect known as Boko Haram? has claimed responsbility for the church attacks. Boko Haram aims to impose Islamic Shariah law across Nigeria.

Many northern Nigerian Christians fear the Christmas Day bombings could lead to a religious war in Africa's most populous country.

Meanwhile, a family of four was killed in a machete attack on Wednesday in Nigeria's ethnically and religiously mixed Plateau state ? on the threshold of the country's largely Muslim north and its mostly Christian south.

There was no immediate suggestion the killings had any link to Sunday's church bombings.

Cow power - Energy project to transform cow manure into green energy

King County Executive Dow Constantine joined local dairy farmers in Enumclaw to celebrate the beginning of construction on a digester project that will transform cow manure into green energy and other valuable resources.

?The robust agriculture industry on the Enumclaw Plateau is the perfect place for this innovation that will generate renewable energy, save money for family farmers, and preserve the environment,? said Executive Constantine.

Rainier Biogas LLC, a partnership between Skagit County-based company Farm Power Northwest, and at least three local dairies near Enumclaw, will build and operate the digester. The digester is an air-tight tank that uses microorganisms to break down or ?digest? the manure and organic matter. The bacteria produce waste gas that can be harnessed to make electricity. Construction on the $4 million project is scheduled to be completed in summer 2012.

Manure waste management on dairy farms is a significant operational challenge for farmers because of its volume and handling expense. Improperly managed manure can pollute water bodies.

Processing manure over three weeks in a 1-million-gallon digester vessel, Rainier Biogas will generate enough electricity to power 600 typical homes.

The elimination of manure lagoon methane emissions combined with clean electricity will reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by the equivalent of 9,000 tons of CO2 per year, which is the equivalent of removing 2,200 cars from the road.

In addition, the treatment process separates digested straw from the processed manure, creating a source of cow bedding as well as a soil amendment to nourish fields that grow feed, saving farmers thousands of dollars a month in operational expenses.

Employees with King County?s Water and Land Resources and Wastewater Treatment divisions served as technical advisors related to agricultural sustainability and resource recovery, though the majority of the $492,000 King County has committed to the project came from federal grants appropriated by?? Senator Maria Cantwell and Representative Dave Reichert.

The groundbreaking celebration was also attended by Washington State Director of the USDA?s Office of Rural Development, Mario Villanueva; representatives from Puget Sound Energy, One Pacific Coast Bank, Washington State University and the Andgar Corporation.

VIDEO: Get Ready for More Pretty Little Liars! Everyone Is Fighting! (omg!)

When Pretty Little Liars returns, the girls will not be the tight-knit foursome we're used to seeing.

"The girls have formed this schism, especially between Spencer and Emily," Troian Bellisario, who plays Spencer, told TVGuide.com. "They have two very different ideas of how to approach what A has done to them."

Pretty Little Liars First Look: Things don't look good for the couples

Emily, meanwhile, is no longer backing down and following Spencer's plans. "Emily has gained so much confidence," Shay Mitchell says."She's really on a mission to find out who A is and put a stop to everything."

In the video below, we catch up with Bellisario, Mitchell, Lucy Hale and Ashley Benson, who share some insight into the upcoming season, including Aria and Ezra's "coming out," the return of Maya, and three (yes, three!) big fight scenes.

6 books you should resolve to read in 2012

It?s common practice, as the year draws to a close, to reflect on the past twelve months ? to think back on what you did, how you spent your time, and who you spent it with. My years, more than anything, are shaped by books so when I look back I?m thinking about what I read. The same goes for thinking about the year to come: When I make my New Year?s resolutions, it?s pretty much just a long list of books that I want to get my hands on. And so, in looking forward to 2012, here are some things that I?ve already gotten my hands on; it would be wise of you to do the same. If what I?m reading (and loving) is any indication, 2012 is going to be a strange and wonderful year.

An enchanting (couldn?t resist) retelling of a classic Russian fairy tale, except this time it?s set in Alaska, circa 1920. Mabel and Jack are newcomers to Alaska and are being pulled apart by desolation and loneliness. Unable to conceive, the couple remains childless and the strain of maintaining their farm has pushed them to the edge of their capacity. In a rare moment of playfulness, the couple builds a child out of snow. Shortly thereafter, a child called Faina appears ? ethereal, bewitching, and mysterious. Ivey creates a world out of emptiness and populates it in completely unexpected ways.

Chronic School Absenteeism Linked to Mental Health Problems (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Dec. 22 (HealthDay News) -- Children who miss school often are more likely to have symptoms of mental health problems as teens, a new study finds.

Researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles and colleagues compiled information on 17,000 students in grades 1 through 12.

The study found kids in second through eighth grades with mental health problems, such as antisocial behavior or depression, missed more school days than kids without those issues.

Middle and high school students who missed a lot of school were also more likely to be later diagnosed with mental health issues.

The study is in the journal Child Development.

"We've long known that students who are frequently absent from school are more likely to have symptoms of psychiatric disorders, but less clear is the reason why," said lead study author Jeffrey Wood, an associate professor of educational psychology and psychiatry at UCLA, in a Society for Research in Child Development news release. "These two aspects of youths' adjustment may at times exacerbate one another, leading over the course of time to more of each."

Because chronically missing school might influence the development of mental health issues and vice versa, researchers said programs that treat both mental health issues and school absenteeism are important.

Musical Google Doodle Wishes Users 'Happy Holidays'

Google continued the holiday cheer today with a homepage doodle that highlights the symbols of the season.

In an image reminiscent of a Lite-Brite, Google spells out its logo with a snowflake, Santa Claus, a bell, snowman, candle, and a present. When you first click on the logo, though, there will be six blinking lights below the Google name. Click them to dim the background lights and turn on the Christmas lights. Once all the images are lit up, they will begin to dance to "Jingle Bells."

This is not Google's first holiday-related surprise for its users. Last weekend, the company published one of its Easter Eggs: searching for the term "let it snow" (without quotes) produced some snowy search results that allowed users to "draw" on the snow-covered screen. Searching for "Hanukkah" and "Christmas," meanwhile, also produced search results enhanced by holiday lights.

Doodle Xmas

Earlier in the week, Google went live with Santa's Google Voice number (855-34-SANTA), which lets kids call the man in red directly from a Gmail account and leave a message. There's also the option to craft a message that will be sent to the child (or grownup) of choice.

If you need something a little more visual, Google-owned YouTube is also offering special video messages from a cartoon Santa, which can be customized to suit the name and specific tastes of the recipient.

Also on YouTube, users can click a new snowflake icon to "make it snow" atop the videos. The snowflakes will gather at the bottom of the screen, eventually obscuring your view, unless you click the snowflake again to clear it. To create your own customized snow scene, meanwhile, Snowify.me lets users enter an address and create a personalized holiday card using Google Street View imagery and digital snow.

Holiday Google Doodle

Last year, Google replaced its logo with a collection of holiday scenes created by the company's "chief doodler." The 17 scenes included an "Up on the Housetop" drawing of Santa approaching a snowy chimney as well as several other doodles representing holiday traditions around the world. They included: a Buche de Noel, a traditional Christmas dessert enjoyed in many French-speaking countries; a depiction of three women performing a classical Indian dance; several men performing on an oud, a pear-shaped stringed instrument commonly used in Middle Eastern music; and Moroccan henna lamps.

For more on Google's doodles, meanwhile, see the slideshow below. One of the company's more popular doodles was a playable image in honor of musician Les Paul, which eventually got its own standalone site. The company has also honored Gumby creator Art Clokey, Muppets creator Jim Henson, Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, and Intel co-founder Robert Noyce.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Google obtained a patent for its popular homepage doodles, covering "systems and methods for enticing users to access a Web site."

(AP) ? For at least a while, Tulane managed to hang tough against No.1 Syracuse. The Green Wave kept the score close for 13 minutes, trading points with the Orange.

But after Kendall Timmons hit a 3-pointer at the shot-clock buzzer to pull Tulane to 22-19 with 6:57 to go before halftime, Kris Joseph hit a big 3-pointer to extend the lead.

Then the Orange hit another. And another.

All told, a 19-0 run highlighted by five 3s from three different players gave Syracuse a commanding 41-19 lead going into halftime. Tulane couldn't make up the damage, eventually falling 80-61 on Thursday night.

"We were executing on the offensive end and defense-wise we gave them a couple of 3s early and they didn't make them," guard Kendall Timmons said. "But one of their bigs came off the bench and started knocking down 3s and it was just like a snowball effect. They started coming from everywhere."

While the Orange hit wide-open shots, the Green Wave struggled to drain its own, shooting 17 of 50 for 34 percent from the field. Timmons, Tulane's leading scorer, finished 4 of 12 for 16 points, seven of which came on free throws.

Guard Ricky Tarrant scored 15 points and was 2 of 5 from the beyond the arc, and guard Jordan Callahan scored 10 points after sinking two of his five 3-point attempts.

Less than a week after shutting down North Carolina State with a 23-0 run, Syracuse nearly matched that dominance against Tulane. Heading into the game, Green Wave head coach Ed Conroy said trying to prevent the Orange from taking off on another tear was a point of emphasis.

As Conroy and Tulane saw, once Syracuse takes control, it's close to impossible to recover from.

"We talked about the runs that they're able to go on and what causes it," Conroy said. "There were a couple of lapses that made me worry about it. They're so explosive. I thought they showed in that stretch why they're No. 1 in the country."

James Southerland and Brandon Triche each hit a pair of 3-pointers to key the decisive surge as the Orange remained unbeaten. It's the third straight season Syracuse has won its first 13 games. The Orange have won three straight since reaching the top spot in the rankings 10 days ago, including victories over North Carolina State and Bucknell.

Tulane (11-2) had faced the No. 1 team in the nation twice before, losing to Cincinnati (72-59) in January 2000 and Memphis (97-71) in February 2008. The Green Wave has never defeated a top-five team and hasn't beaten a top-10 since a 49-47 victory over No. 9 Memphis in February 1983.

Dion Waiters had 15 points, Joseph added 13, and Southerland 10 for the Orange.

Josh Davis, a transfer from North Carolina State who was averaging 12.1 points and 10.2 rebounds for Tulane, missed all nine shots he took and finished with three points and six rebounds.

Tulane stayed tough in the opening minutes despite finding little room inside, playing the Orange to a standstill as they worked the clock in deliberate fashion. A short jumper by Kevin Thomas knotted the score at 14-all midway through the first half, and Timmons' 3-pointer at the shot-clock buzzer moved the Green Wave within 22-19 with 6:57 left.

That was it for Tulane as the Orange's long-range attack shifted into high gear. The Green Wave missed four straight shots and were called for two shot-clock violations in the closing minutes, while Syracuse hit five straight 3-pointers to gain a 41-19 halftime lead. The Orange finished 10 of 21 from beyond the arc.

It all started after a miss by Triche. Fab Melo tapped the rebound out to Joseph, and he hit a 3 from the left wing.

Joseph then sent Scoop Jardine off on fast-break layup and Triche hit a 3 from the right corner after quick passes around the perimeter by Jardine and Joseph.

After Melo blocked a dunk attempt by Tre Drye, it was Southerland's turn to shine. He hit another 3 from the right wing, drove the lane and fed Baye Keita for a resounding dunk, then hit a 3 from the top of the key.

Jardine ended the spurt by feeding Triche for a 3 from the right corner.

Tulane, called for three shot-clock violations in the first half, shot just 24 percent (6 of 25) and committed nine turnovers in the opening period, while the Orange hit 14 of 25 shots (56 percent), including 7 of 12 from beyond the arc. In the previous two games, Syracuse made 19 of 42 3-point attempts, a 45 percent clip.

In its win over the Wolfpack, Syracuse scored 23 straight points in a first-half spurt that took just 6:47 ? about a minute longer than Thursday night's blitz.

Although Tulane entered the game with only one loss ? 61-50 at Wofford ? and had a victory over Georgia Tech, its non-league schedule has been weak. The Green Wave's slate ranks almost at the bottom among the 344 teams in Division I, and among its victims were Division II New Orleans and Division III MacMurray College.

Conroy has a roster that includes six transfers and seven freshmen, and he felt the team needed lots of practice to improve. That's why two teams that don't even count toward Tulane's Ratings Percentage Index were on the schedule and why the Green Wave has only two games in the last three weeks of December.

The 10 Most Innovative Video Games of 2011

Platform: Nintendo 3DS

It's a little hard to admit how much I like Pushmo, the groundbreaking game for the Nintendo 3DS developed by Intelligent Systems and released just a week ago. First off, the cutesy cartoon graphics seem like they were designed for people half my height and a quarter my age, and the syrupy techno soundtrack featured on many Nintendo DS games is here, too.

Yet gameplay is incredibly addictive. You play as Mallo, a tiny tomato-shaped character who pulls, pushes, and jumps across squares on a small game board. It's something like QuBIT for pocket gamers. Few games fulfill on the 3D promise, but Pushmo does in spades. Mallo moves from side to side but, in an almost surreal way, can also move diagonally and front to back. This ties into the strategy; in later levels you have to plan your movements strategically and not box yourself into a 3D corner. That would not be possible unless you could see in the game in a 3D plane.

Hellbender salamander study seeks answers for global amphibian decline

Tuesday, December 20, 2011

A new study co-authored by University of Florida researchers on the endangered Ozark Hellbender giant salamander is the first to detail its skin microbes, the bacteria and fungi that defend against pathogens.

Published today in the online journal PLoS One, the study details changes in the salamander's declining health and habitat, and could provide a baseline for how changing ecosystems are affecting the rapid decline of amphibians worldwide.

"Scientists and biologists view amphibians as kind of a 'canary in the coal mine' and their health is often used as a barometer for overall ecosystem health, including potential problems that may affect humans," said study co-author Max Nickerson, herpetology curator at the Florida Museum of Natural History on the UF campus.

More than 2 feet long, the Ozark Hellbender is the one of largest salamander species in the United States. Its unusual biological characteristics include the ability to regenerate injured or missing body parts.

In the new study, lead author Cheryl Nickerson, a professor at Arizona State University, along with NASA and UF scientists, cultured and identified microorganisms from abnormal and injured tissue on the salamanders searching for pathogens that may be causing the lack of regeneration and population decline.

The researchers found several potentially dangerous pathogens, including Aeromonas hydrophila, a bacterium scientists believe is associated with disease and death in both amphibians and fish.

While many different pathogens were found in the injured tissue, no single organism was found to be responsible for the lack of regeneration. Researchers believe the occurrence of abnormalities and injury in the Ozark Hellbender may have many contributing factors, including disease and habitat degradation, and say further study is needed

"If you don't understand an amphibian's skin you don't understand the amphibians," Nickerson said.

Scientists have known about the remarkable powers of salamander regeneration for more than 200 years, but beginning in the 1980s, researchers noticed a sharp decline in the Ozark Hellbender population. They also found a specific population from the North Fork of Missouri's White River was declining dramatically and losing the ability to regenerate.

"We were finding animals with no legs that were still alive with flesh wounds or bones sticking out of limbs," Nickerson said.

"Looking at the microorganisms on their skin can help us understand why these animals aren't regenerating at the rate we're used to seeing, and may lead to conclusions about population declines," he said.

In November, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service added the Ozark Hellbender to the federal endangered species list. Its species name is Cryptobranchus alleganiensis bishopi.

Stanley Trauth, curator of amphibians and reptiles in the department of biological sciences at Arkansas State University, said public awareness of the species is increasing, and Hellbenders have recently been successfully bred for the first time in captivity at the St. Louis Zoo.

"There has been a dramatic decrease in the population and there are a number of factors that contribute to that," Trauth said. "But these types of studies will help provide more consistent results on the impact of microorganisms and animal health."

"In the last 20 years we have been finding a tremendous number of injuries on these animals and those injuries are not healing," Nickerson said. "Now the population is down to almost nothing and we are very worried about the species and the environmental changes around them."

The Ozark Hellbender's fossil record goes back 161 million years and it represents one of the most ancient lines of amphibian life.

"This is about as far, in phylogeny, as that type of regeneration goes, this is the most ancient group of salamanders that we know of," Nickerson said. "They have been through a lot and we want to find out what these changes mean."

"The animals in the river systems in that area, just like in Florida, where we have these huge amounts of spring water you have to worry about it," Nickerson said. "That's a big dome of fresh water and it has implications on human health as well."

Stanford's memory impaired, psychologist says (Reuters)

(Reuters) - By Eileen O'Grady

HOUSTON, Dec 21 (Reuters) ? Allen Stanford clearly suffered a brain injury that has impaired his judgment and memory, a neurologist testified on Wednesday, the second day of a hearing on whether the accused swindler can stand trial on Ponzi allegations.

Stanford's lawyers argue that a jailhouse fight and anti-anxiety medication have left him with no memory and therefore he is not competent to go to trial as scheduled on January 23.

"He does suffer from brain injury," said defense witness Ralph Lilly, a specialist in behavioral neurology. "He has no real understanding of the deficits he has."

Stanford, 61, sat quietly at the defense table during Wednesday's proceedings and had little communication with his lawyers. Judge David Hittner allowed his handcuffs to be removed so Stanford could take notes.

On Tuesday, the first day of the hearing, the court heard from prison psychologist Robert Cochrane, who said that Stanford was competent to stand trial.

Cochrane said it would be "incredibly rare" for a person to suffer memory loss that would prevent him from recalling key events from his life before the 2009 fight.

Stanford once owned luxury homes in the Caribbean, Houston and Miami. He was arrested in June 2009 and has been indicted on charges of fraud, conspiracy and money laundering. He has pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutors say he ran a $7 billion Ponzi scheme that bilked investors throughout the United States and Latin America. A Ponzi scheme is a fraud in which existing investors are paid through deposits from newer ones.

While prosecutors have called only Cochrane, Stanford's lawyers plan to call two more medical witnesses on Wednesday. On Tuesday, the first defense witness, neuropsychologist Richard Lawrence Pollock, testified that because of his brain injury Stanford would not be capable of taking part in a trial.

"Mr. Stanford would have a very difficult time assisting an attorney at trial," Pollock said.

The case is U.S. v. Stanford, U.S. District Court, Southern District of Texas. No. 09-00342.

DURBAN, South Africa (AP) ? Back-room negotiations began in earnest Monday on a deal to rescue the only treaty governing greenhouse gas reductions and to launch talks on a broader agreement to include the world's largest polluters: China and other emerging economies, the United States and Europe.

Key players laid out their opening positions in public at U.N. climate talks in South Africa, and were beginning a round of private meetings to probe each other's meanings and intentions ? which remained murky.

South African authorities said they were deporting three activists from the Greenpeace environmental group after they were arrested trying to drape a protest banner from the rooftop of a beachfront hotel. The activists from Germany, Denmark and Australia pleaded guilty to trespassing in a court hearing, the Home Affairs Department said.

As the 194-nation conference moved into its decisive week, negotiators were feeling the pressure of a looming deadline: the expiry in 12 months of commitments by industrial countries to reduce climate-changing carbon emissions.

The European Union is championing a deal to get all major countries to agree to binding pollution targets in the future as its condition for renewing its commitments under the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. It wants an agreement now to begin negotiations on a new all-encompassing treaty that would conclude by 2015 and take effect five years later.

"We do not need more thinking, we need more action," said Connie Hedegaard, the European commissioner on climate action.

The linchpins of such a deal are China and the United States ? and both set hard conditions.

During the first week of the conference, attention honed in on China, and whether it was signaling new flexibility or reframing known positions.

After a private meeting with the Chinese, the Europeans walked away disappointed, said an EU delegate.

Despite public declarations it would participate in a legally binding agreement in the future, China unequivocally told the EU it would not accept binding targets for itself, said the delegate, speaking on condition of anonymity because negotiations were still in an early phase.

Earlier, China's top climate negotiator Xie Zenhua, in his first meeting with reporters, said China wanted to ensure all previous commitments by the industrial countries were met before entering into the next phase.

If that happened, he said, China could discuss a post-2020 deal. "The framework, I think, should be a legally binding one, or some documents to that effect."

But Xie set several "preconditions," including an extension of the Kyoto commitments for industrial countries, honoring commitments on immediate and long-term financial aid to poor countries, and delivery on promises of new technologies to develop low-carbon economies.

U.S. envoy Todd Stern said the United States has no objection to a post-2020 treaty, as long as it treats everyone the same.

Countries must accept "obligations and commitments that have the same legal force," Stern said.

But he did not believe that China and others were prepared to unconditionally accept legal parity with everyone else.

Stern said any future agreement should revise the division of countries into two distinct groups, industrial and developing, as they were defined in the basic 1992 climate convention.

"It just doesn't make any sense. The world has changed dramatically since 1992," he said.

Canadian Environment Minister Peter Kent affirmed Ottawa will not sign on to another round of emissions reductions commitments under the Kyoto Protocol ? regardless of any new stand by China.

Canada, Japan and Russia all announced last year their rejection of Kyoto's second commitment period, starting in 2013.

The signals from Beijing "could be an important development," and Canada is waiting to hear more details, Kent said. Nonetheless, "that would not change our position."

He made no announcement regarding earlier reports that Canada would formally withdraw from Kyoto by the end of the year.

If it did so, it would be the second signatory to renounce the accord. The first was the United States in 2001.
