Direct Mail Services ? What Ever It Is

Many companies Worldwide are seeking new ways to reach out to potential customers and rather than utilise professional direct mail services, they are booking a troop of PR girls, digging out the bunny tails and bow ties or investing in high- tech, high- spec, new- fangled online marketing packages and but undeniable by measurable results; sometimes the oldies are the best!
Direct Mail Services are anything but new but that doesn?t mean they should be shunned in favour of forward- thinking alternatives that thus far, have only assumptions to base their worth upon. Indeed, whereas newer revelations in the marketing industries can?t be trusted due to their lack of tangible returns on investment, direct mail services ? although formed decades ? rarely fail to deliver.
Direct mail services can be highly targeted to a specific audience and each direct mail service (campaign) can be tailored according to the product or service on offer. Thus, customers are never bombarded with worthless information and only receive advertising ?buff? that relates to their individual consumption needs.
Additionally, direct mail services are tangible and easily personalised. In fact, further to targeting customers with only relevant campaigns, direct mail services can be produced fully inclusive of names and individual information that adds a personal touch.
As aforementioned, because direct mail services offer a physical message as opposed to a standard format email circulation for example, potential customers are almost guaranteed to take notice and at least skim what is directly in front of them before they make a decision.
Direct mail services for direct mailing are also highly versatile offering a wide selection of format and size options. From postcards and magazines to full colour brochures, direct mail services are a suitable marketing strategy for any application.
If you have decided that it?s time to head back not forward, direct mail services, FBI Direct ? with a specialist delivery, packing and sales team ? are the way to go. Visit www.fbidirect.co.uk to find out how they can support your direct mailing campaigns today.

Stepmom Gives Toddler Breast Milk | Strollerderby

lanisoh with milk 300x225 Stepmom Gives Toddler Her Breast Milk, Doesnt See The Problem

Donating breast milk is a wonderful thing but, in this case, keep your milk to yourself!

Mom?s relationship with stepmom is a tricky one, at best. Very rarely is everyone all Bruce, Demi and Ashton about the business of combining families.

So maybe if you stole some woman?s guy and then married him maybe you should be keeping your breast milk to yourself. Just a suggestion. Or, if you?re ever the stepmom of my children, consider it an order.

I mean, duuuude.

In the forum over on CafeMom a woman poses the question of whether her friend should be upset upon discovering that her daughter?s stepmom gave the 3-year-old her breast milk. Apparently the friend had a baby with the guy, he cheated and left her for to marry the ?other woman?.? Now his new wife has a baby she is breastfeeding so she has frozen breast milk at home.

Here is how it went down (as posted on CafeMom messageboard):

Apparently dd was thirsty and there was nothing in the house to drink so they gave her Step moms frozen breast milk. Bf (best friend) didn?t find out until a relative told her. When she confronted Ex and Step mom, they acted like she was the crazy one. And to make matters worse. All of his family is 100% on his side.

Dude. You aren?t Salma Hayek and my kid ain?t starving to death. Give her some water and keep your breast milk to yourself. How is this even a question? Who knows what the stepmom has in her breast milk? And even if her milk is perfectly safe it is beyond inappropriate. A little too Hand That Rocks The Cradle for me, but maybe I?m overreacting? A growing number of women are buying breast milk online from strangers. But that?s mom?s choice. In this case she wasn?t given a choice.

What about you? How would you feel if you found out your toddler?s stepmom gave her breast milk?

Green Blog: On the Fate of Asia's Great Rivers

A new report from the National Research Council, a group that advises the United States government, brings some sobriety to the oft-heated discussion about melting Himalayan glaciers.

Interest in the glaciers intensified in 2010 when the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the United Nations body that publishes periodic summaries of climate science, acknowledged an error in its 2007 report. One paragraph had said in reference to the Himalayan glaciers that ?the likelihood of them disappearing by the year 2035 and perhaps sooner is very high.? After New Scientist magazine questioned this claim in 2010, the I.P.C.C. said the paragraph was based on poor information.

The new report, published on Wednesday, concludes that glaciers in the eastern and central regions of the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau are indeed melting, at accelerating rates, while those in the western part of the region are in better shape. However, over at least the next few decades, melting glaciers are not likely to be the main factor influencing water availability at lower elevations, the panel concluded.

A statement accompanying the report said that ?shifts in the location, intensity and variability of both rain and snow will likely have a greater impact on regional water supplies than glacier retreat will.? My colleague Vikas Bajaj, for instance, recently outlined the effect that shifts in the annual monsoon are having on Indian agriculture. He followed up on that report by answering questions and laying out possible solutions to India?s water problems.

The question of future water supply in this region is of profound importance. The Himalayan glaciers are the headwaters of many of the big river systems in Asia ? the Ganges, the Mekong and the Yantze rivers, for instance ? and those rivers in turn are a major component of a hydrologic system that supplies drinking and irrigation water. The rivers are thus vital to the welfare of about 1.5 billion people, or more than 20 percent of the world?s population.

While discounting fears of a near-term crisis precipitated by glacial melt, the National Research Council report also warned of potential long-term risks associated with the climatic warming of the region.

?Many basins in the region are ?water-stressed? due to both social changes and environmental factors, and this stress is projected to intensify? with growing populations, the summary statement said. ?Climate change could exacerbate this stress in the future.?

Pastor's unusual 'get out the vote' effort: lynching photo

A roadside sign in Indianapolis shows the 1930 lynching of two black men. The Greater St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church is using the sign to encourage nearby residents to vote.

By Andrew Mach, NBC News

A pastor in Indiana has put up a sign that uses a historical image of the 1930 lynching of two black teenagers in an effort to recharge the black vote.

Rev. Joy Thornton, the senior pastor of Greater St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church in Indianapolis, said he?s concerned that African-Americans have grown complacent about voting, and he wants to urge people to exercise the right he says was hard won, the Associated Press reported.

The sign, which has stood for nearly a week along the street in front of the church, shows, on one side, a white mob gathered around the teens to watch the lynching in Marion, Ind. Atop the photo is the word ?VOTE!!!? Beneath it is the question: ?Is this a reason to vote?? The other side of the sign shows an image of slaves in chains, with wording beneath it that reads, ?Lest we forget.?

?[The sign] is to let people know there?s been a price paid for the privilege of voting,? Thornton, a black pastor of what he describes as a multiracial congregation, told Indianapolis' WISH TV. ?Oftentimes people get complacent and don?t realize that people made a sacrifice, matter of fact, the ultimate sacrifice for such a privilege.?

But not all like to be reminded of one of the most painful chapters in the state?s history. ?

Ronnie Judd, who was delivering medical supplies in the neighborhood when he saw the sign last week,?said he found the sign embarrassing. Judd is white, and said he interpreted the photo to mean that if blacks don?t vote for President Obama in November, the days of lynching will return.

?We have come too far to go back to those ways,? Judd told the AP.

Mary Bishop, who works across the street from the church, said she doesn?t agree with the sign.

?It?s not a good example for him to have it like that,? Bishop told WISH TV. ?He meant well, but he went about it in the wrong way.?

Thornton said the sign isn?t meant to sway voters to vote for any particular party, but rather to urge participation in November's presidential election. He said he believes some black voters have grown complacent because of President Obama's stance on same-sex marriage.?

?Regardless of who you vote for, you need to exercise your privilege, which is voting,? Thornton said.

Joyce Hise, who also works across the street from the church, said she didn?t have a problem with the sign.

?It was just kind of a little shocker,? Hise told WISH TV. ?It made me stop to think. So many people don?t know, and they don?t realize this was part of our history, and it is a reason to vote.?

Joe Slash, president of the Indianapolis Urban League, told WISH TV that he agrees with the need to urge people to vote, but he doesn?t agree with the photos used for the sign.

Thornton, however, defended the shock value of the sign.

?I don?t think it is as harsh as the fact that when we talk about African-Americans being murdered and killed at an alarming rate,? Thornton said. ?It?s not as harsh as the fact we make up about 12 percent of the population and about 90 percent of the incarceration. It is not as harsh as the drugs that we are being exploited within our communities.?

Thornton, who said he?s received two complaints about the sign since it was put up, has no plans to take it down ?until the Lord says so.?

University of Rochester Medical Center scientists discovered new genetic evidence linking cholesterol and cancer, raising the possibility that cholesterol medications could be useful in the future for cancer prevention or to augment existing cancer treatment.

The data, published in the online journal Cell Reports, support several recent population-based studies that suggest individuals who take cholesterol-lowering drugs may have a reduced risk of cancer, and, conversely that individuals with the highest levels of cholesterol seem to have an elevated risk of cancer.

The cancer-cholesterol question has been debated since the early 20th century, and along with it doctors and scientists have observed various trends and associations. However, until now genetic evidence directly linking cholesterol and malignancy has been lacking, said senior author Hartmut (Hucky) Land, Ph.D., Robert and Dorothy Markin Professor and chair, Department of Biomedical Genetics, and director of research and co-director of the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center at URMC.

"Scientifically it is very satisfying to have data that support longstanding ideas about cholesterol in the context of cancer," Land said. "Our paper provides a rationale for cholesterol targeting as a potentially fruitful approach to cancer intervention or prevention strategies."

Cholesterol is a fat-like substance supplied in foods and made in cells throughout the body. Too much cholesterol is bad for the heart and vascular system. It is typically measured as serum cholesterol by routine blood tests.

Unlike serum cholesterol that is bound to proteins, however, cholesterol also hides inside cells. While locked inside cell membranes before it is eventually exported, cholesterol has an impact on cell growth and survival. A gene, known as ABCA1, is at the crossroads of the process that shuttles intracellular cholesterol outbound.

Several years ago while conducting unrelated experiments that were published in the journal Nature, Land and colleagues first noticed the importance of ABCA1. At that time, they identified a network of approximately 100 so-called "cooperation response genes" that mediate the action of cancer genes. ABCA1 was found among these genes and is frequently turned off in presence of other mutant cancer genes.

In the latest investigation, Land and co-author Bradley Smith, Ph.D., a post-doctoral fellow in the Land lab, wanted to further understand the role of ABCA1 and cholesterol in cancer. They found that defective cholesterol exportation appears to be a key component in a variety of cancers.

The proper function of ABCA1, in fact, is critical for sensing of cell stress. If ABCA1 function is lost in cancer cells, cholesterol is allowed to build up in the cells' mitochondria, or energy centers, making their membranes more rigid. This in turn inhibits the function of cell-death triggers that normally become activated in response to cell stresses, as for example cancer gene activation. Therefore, when functioning properly ABCA1 has anti-cancer activity in the sense that by keeping mitochondrial cholesterol low it protects the functioning of cellular stress response systems and acts as a barrier to tumor formation and progression.

Smith and Land also demonstrated that some of the relatively rare ABCA1 mutations found in human colon cancers by other investigators disabled the gene's ability to export cholesterol. And by re-establishing the cholesterol export function in human colon cancer cells, they inhibited the cells' ability to grow as cancers when grafted onto mice.

The URMC study, therefore, is the first to directly show how ABCA1 loss-of-function and cholesterol may play a role in cancer.

Millions of Americans take cholesterol-lowering drugs or statins, as prescribed by physicians. The drugs work by blocking the action of key enzymes in the liver, which synthesizes cholesterol. Clinical trials also are evaluating statins as a tool against cancer, and some previous studies suggest that when used in combination with chemotherapy, statins might make chemotherapy more effective by sensitizing certain cancer cells to chemotherapy-induced cell death.

Land, however, urges caution and further study. Doctors do not know the appropriate statin dose for cancer prevention or treatment of cancer-related conditions. Side effects cannot be ignored either, and little research has distinguished between the responses among people who take statins.

"The link between cholesterol and cancer is clear," Land said, "but it's premature to say that statins are the answer."

This Is How Facebook Is Tracking Your Internet Activity (FB)

This Is How Facebook Is Tracking Your Internet Activity (FB)

Facebook really is watching your every move online. In testing out a new diagnostic tool called Abine DNT+, we noticed that Facebook has more than 200 "trackers" watching our internet activity. Skip directly to see our findings > Abine defines trackers as "a request that a webpage tries to make your browser perform that will share information intended to record, profile, or share your online activity." The trackers come in the shape of cookies, Javascript, 1-pixel beacons, and Iframes. Cookies are tiny bits of software that web pages drop onto your device that identify you anonymously but nonetheless signal useful behavior about your background interests to advertisers who might want to target you. Critics call this spying. Advertisers call it targeting. In an email to Business Insider, Abine privacy analyst Sarah Downey explained why users should pay more attention to trackers, and block them: In addition to invading your privacy, these tracking requests can consume large amounts of data.  And transferring lots of data takes time. Generally, the more tracking requests on a website, the slower that website loads. That's why DNT+ gets you surfing at 125% of the normal speed and with 90% of the bandwidth, compared to a browser without DNT+ running. Equipped with this insight, an inquisitive Facebook user might be wondering why they wouldn't block all trackers and cookies alike. With a slightly harsh tone, the Facebook page cautions: Technologies like cookies, pixel tags ("pixels"), and local storage are used to deliver, secure, and understand products, services, and ads, on and off Facebook. Your browser or device may allow you to block these technologies, but you may not be able to use some features on Facebook if you block them. There is certainly truth to this statement, not all cookies are used for tracking. Many are simply placed in order to store information for later use. But it is the broader scope of "requests" that present the larger issue. In simple terms, Downey explained that when you navigate to a website, your browser constructs that site by communicating back and forth with the server where the site information is stored. These communications are the “requests.”   But it isn't just the website you are visiting that makes requests for information: online trackers from other companies hidden on the site do it, too. They act as third parties on your computer: you can't see them without privacy software, you probably wouldn't expect them to be present, and you probably don't intend to share your information with them. They request information like your geographic location, which other sites you’ve visited, what you click, and your Facebook username. In terms of what the "requests" represent, Facebook noted that they could not comment because the requests do not mean a whole lot unless you can see exactly what they are and how they are used. Facebook's entire site is run off of JavaScript and other such tags that have an array of purposes. So, we set out to see just how much Facebook is watching our internet browsing activity. Using the Abine software, we tracked to what extent Facebook trackers increased for each new click. We started by cleaning out the browser cache and search history, and then went about using the browser like it was the start of a typical work day ...It started off as just a normal day... The first thing I do when I sit down at my computer in the morning is open up Facebook. Just by logging in, I could see that Facebook had 228 trackers watching my web activity. So when DNT+ says it's blocked Facebook from tracking you 200 times, that means it's blocked 200 requests from Facebook that attempt to use the information in the request to collect information about you. Those 200 requests could have been a mix of Javascript, iframes, images, and cookies, and they could have spawned even more requests. Note: we ran the test on various browsers, and two different machines to ensure the results were consistent. Opening up Business Insider on a new tab. By opening Business Insider and posting a story on Facebook there was an increase of 8 trackers. So, now Facebook had 236 trackers on my browsing activity. Downey explained why this happens: When you visit Business Insider, and there's a Facebook button on the page, Facebook will send a request, that request comes back from Facebook with a button, which contains Javascript code that allows tracking. That piece of code then allows third parties (Facebook in this case) to run code on your machine. That code can write cookies and even make more tracking requests.  Then I opened up Bloomingdale's.com Admittedly one of my favorite sites, I am sure to check it daily -- and, surprisingly there was no uptick in Facebook trackers. See the rest of the story at Business Insider Please follow Advertising on Twitter and Facebook.

'Masterpiece' adds Ralph Lauren Corp. as sponsor

(AP) ? PBS' "Masterpiece" drama showcase is getting a fashionable new supporter.

The public TV program said Monday that the Ralph Lauren Corp. will become a national sponsor, marking the company's first TV sponsorship.

"Masterpiece" executive producer Rebecca Eaton called Lauren's support a tribute to the program, home of the hit British period drama "Downton Abbey."

During last February's New York Fashion Week, Lauren presented his fall 2012 collection to music from "Downton Abbey," telling The Associated Press that he's "always loved the heritage and romance of England."

Lauren's first on-air display of sponsorship begins Sept. 30 with the series "Upstairs Downstairs," which the company called another source of fashion inspiration.

Ralph Lauren joins current "Masterpiece" corporate funder Viking River Cruises. Viewer donations and the Masterpiece Trust also help fund the program.

Munich Re eyes flat reinsurance prices, economy risk

MONACO (Reuters) - Munich Re expects reinsurance prices and conditions will be largely stable when it renews billions of euros worth of contracts with its insurance company clients at the start of 2013, though economic risks complicate the outlook.

The world's biggest reinsurer said in a statement on Sunday that there is "sufficient capacity" in the market for now, a view that chimes with industry observers who predict the supply of reinsurance will exceed demand in the coming months, capping reinsurers' room to raise prices.

Credit rating agency Moody's, for example, calculated that about $6 billion in new capital has entered the already adequately capitalized reinsurance sector since 2011.

"Excess capital tends to drive down revenues and margins," Moody's said.

The reinsurance industry saw one of its costliest years ever in 2011, when earthquakes ravaged Japan and New Zealand, storms blasted the United States and floods swamped Thai industrial parks, but the effect on reinsurance prices has faded.

Munich Re said its prediction of flat prices and conditions also applied to natural catastrophe reinsurance, barring major losses such as from hurricanes or earthquakes that could cause prices to suddenly spike higher.

Prices in casualty business were also expected to stabilize or increase only slightly, with profitability in the segment already being squeezed by the effects of low interest rates, which are being held down by global central banks in the hopes of spurring the economy.

"With negative real interest rates, this pressure will intensify, since claims payments that rise due to inflation can only be partly compensated for by investment gains," Munich Re said in a statement released for the annual meeting of the reinsurance industry being held in Monte Carlo.

"This must be factored into our pricing, particularly for long-term business," the company added.

Low interest rates on government bonds, the main destination for insurers' investments, coupled with financial market volatility from the euro zone sovereign debt crisis, have stifled investment income and forced insurers to concentrate on turning a profit from underwriting alone.

"More than ever, our industry faces the challenge of achieving stable earnings in its core business and further reducing its dependency on the investment result," said Munich Re board member Torsten Jeworrek in the statement.

Munich Re was carefully matching assets to liabilities and taking other operational steps to minimize the fallout from a range of economic risks, including the withdrawal of a country from the euro zone, a government insolvency, a surge in inflation and possible deflation.

"Munich Re regards the stabilization of the euro zone as one of today's most burning political tasks," Jeworrek said.

"We have to prepare ourselves at the same time for very different scenarios." (Reporting by Myles Neligan; additional reporting by Jonathan Gould in Frankfurt; editing by Jason Neely)
