BlackBerry launches service to manage Android, Apple devices

TORONTO (Reuters) - BlackBerry launched a service on Tuesday allowing government agencies and corporate clients to secure and manage devices powered by Google Inc's Android platform and Apple Inc's iOS operating system.

The long-anticipated offering, which BlackBerry had said would come out around mid-year, could help the company sell high-margin services to its large clients even if many, or all, of their workers are using smartphones made by its competitors.

The new Secure Work Space feature will be managed through BlackBerry Enterprise Service (BES) 10, a new back-end system launched at the start of this year that allows BlackBerry's clients to control mobile devices on their internal networks.

The company, a one-time pioneer in the smartphone arena, is now fighting to regain ground lost to Apple's iPhone and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd's Galaxy devices. To compete, it has rolled out a trio of devices powered by its new BlackBerry 10 operating system.

It hopes to win back users with the Z10, Q10 and Q5 devices that were unveiled during the first half of this year. The first comprehensive look at the success of its turnaround plan will likely emerge when it reports quarterly results on Friday.

At the same time, it has indicated a shift in emphasis from smartphones to services.

"With an integrated management console, our clients can now see all of the devices they have on their network, manage those devices and connect to them securely," David Smith, the head of enterprise mobile computing at BlackBerry, said in an interview.

"We now also have a secure work space on Android and iOS that allows our clients to secure and manage the data on those devices as well."

BlackBerry has installed some 18,000 BES 10 servers since the system was launched in January, up from a little more than 12,000 servers one month ago, and more than 60 percent of U.S. Fortune 500 companies are testing or using the system.

The feature, when used to manage Android and iOS devices, will allow IT managers to fence off corporate email, calendars, contacts, tasks, memos, Web browsing and document editing from personal apps and content, which could be less secure.

Flight to Cuba for which Snowden booked departs

MOSCOW (AP) ? A plane took off from Moscow Monday headed for Cuba, but the seat booked by National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden was empty, and there was no sign of him elsewhere on board.

An Aeroflot representative who wouldn't give her name told The Associated Press that Snowden wasn't on flight SU150 to Havana. AP reporters on the flight couldn't see him.

The Interfax news agency also quoted an unidentified Russian security source in Moscow as saying that Snowden wasn't on the plane.

The airline said earlier Snowden registered for the flight using his U.S. passport, which American officials say has been annulled.

Snowden arrived in Moscow on Sunday from Hong Kong, where he had been hiding for several weeks to evade U.S. justice. Ecuador is considering Snowden's asylum application.

After spending a night in Moscow's airport, the former National Security Agency contractor ? and admitted leaker of state secrets ? had been expected to fly to Cuba and Venezuela en route to possible asylum in Ecuador.

Snowden, also a former CIA technician, fled Hong Kong to dodge U.S. efforts to extradite him on espionage charges. Ecuador's Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino said his government had received an asylum request, adding Monday that the decision "has to do with freedom of expression and with the security of citizens around the world." The anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks also said it would help Snowden.

Ecuador has rejected the United States' previous efforts at cooperation, and has been helping WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange avoid prosecution by allowing him to stay at its embassy in London.

Snowden gave documents to The Guardian and The Washington Post newspapers disclosing U.S. surveillance programs that collect vast amounts of phone records and online data in the name of foreign intelligence, often sweeping up information on American citizens. Officials have the ability to collect phone and Internet information broadly but need a warrant to examine specific cases where they believe terrorism is involved.

Snowden had been in hiding for several weeks in Hong Kong, a former British colony with a high degree of autonomy from mainland China. The United States formally sought Snowden's extradition from Hong Kong to face espionage charges but was rebuffed; Hong Kong officials said the U.S. request did not fully comply with their laws.

The Justice Department rejected that claim, saying its request met all of the requirements of the extradition treaty between the U.S. and Hong Kong. During conversations last week, including a phone call Wednesday between Attorney General Eric Holder and Hong Kong Secretary for Justice Rimsky Yuen, Hong Kong officials never raised any issues regarding sufficiency of the U.S. request, a Justice representative said.

The United States was in touch through diplomatic and law enforcement channels with countries that Snowden could travel through or to, reminding them that Snowden is wanted on criminal charges and reiterating Washington's position that Snowden should only be permitted to travel back to the U.S., a State Department official said. Snowden's U.S. passport has been revoked.

U.S. officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the case.

Caitlin Hayden, a spokeswoman for the National Security Council, said, "Given our intensified cooperation after the Boston marathon bombings and our history of working with Russia on law enforcement matters ? including returning numerous high-level criminals back to Russia at the request of the Russian government ? we expect the Russian government to look at all options available to expel Mr. Snowden back to the U.S. to face justice for the crimes with which he is charged."

Still, the United States is likely to have problems interrupting Snowden's passage. The United States does not have an extradition treaty with Russia, but does with Cuba, Venezuela and Ecuador. Even with an extradition agreement though, any country could give Snowden a political exemption.

The likelihood that any of these countries would stop Snowden from traveling on to Ecuador seemed remote. While diplomatic tensions have thawed in recent years, Cuba and the United States are hardly allies after a half-century of distrust. Another country that could see Snowden pass through, Venezuela, could prove difficult, as well. Former President Hugo Chavez was a sworn enemy of the United States and his successor, Nicolas Maduro, earlier this year called President Barack Obama "grand chief of devils." The two countries do not exchange ambassadors.

Snowden's options aren't numerous, said Assange's lawyer, Michael Ratner.

"You have to have a country that's going to stand up to the United States," Ratner said. "You're not talking about a huge range of countries here."

It also wasn't clear Snowden was finished disclosing highly classified information.

Snowden has perhaps more than 200 sensitive documents, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said on CBS' "Face the Nation."

BALTIMORE (AP) ? Everything?s a go for Orb.

The Kentucky Derby winner was in a playful mood the day before the Preakness, making faces for photographers between nibbles of grass outside his stall at Pimlico Race Course.

?He?s really settled in well. He seems to be energetic about what he?s doing so I couldn?t be more pleased,? trainer Shug McGaughey said on a warm and sunny Friday morning. ?We?re excited about giving him a whirl to see if we can get it done and go on to the next step.?

Getting it done would mean defeating eight rivals in the 1 3-16-mile Preakness to set up a Triple Crown try in the Belmont Stakes three weeks from Saturday. Orb is the even-money favorite, and there?s a growing feeling that this 3-year-old bay colt may be special enough to give thoroughbred racing its first Triple Crown champion since Affirmed in 1978.

?We?d sure love to have that opportunity,? said McGaughey, seeming relaxed and confident. ?Probably the racing world would love to see it, too. It brings a lot more attention to what we?re doing from all standpoints.?

Orb extended his winning streak to five with a thrilling victory in the Derby two weeks ago, when jockey Joel Rosario patiently guided the colt from 17th to first in the final half mile over a sloppy track.

In the Preakness, Orb will break from the No. 1 post, a spot that has seen only one winner ? Tabasco Cat in 1994 ? since 1961.

?Who knows how this race is going to go, but I don?t think it will be a problem,? Rosario said of the inside post. ?He?s a horse that comes from behind, so I really don?t think it will affect him. I?m just excited to go into this with a horse who has a chance to win.?

A chance?

While rival trainers aren?t conceding the race, most agree Orb is the best of the bunch.

?Orb, he?s a freak. Right now, everybody should be rooting for Orb, except for the connections of the other horses in the race,? trainer Bob Baffert said ? and he?s got a horse in the race, 12-1 choice Govenor Charlie. ?Anybody who?s not rooting for Orb, there?s something mentally wrong with them.?

Baffert has been there before. Three of his five Preakness winners had also won the Derby, but were unable to complete the Triple Crown with a win in the Belmont. He says the Preakness is the least stressful of the three races.

?There is absolutely no pressure, believe it or not because you?ve just won the Derby,? he said. ?You?re flying high and everybody?s excited. You don?t think about it. The next one (the Belmont) is the pressure.?

Getting to the next one may sound easy. It isn?t. Six of the past eight Derby winners did not win the Preakness, and McGaughey is well aware of the pitfalls.

?There are a lot of ways you can lose. Freaky things can happen,? he said. ?You hope he doesn?t get in any trouble, you hope he handles the track, you hope he handles the kickback of the dirt, you hope he handles the day. If he does all that, I would have to think it will take a pretty darn good horse to beat him.?

Maybe it?s Goldencents, who did not take to the slop at Churchill Downs and finished 17th after winning the Santa Anita Derby in April.

?Orb?s not like a one-race hit. All year long he?s been super impressive,? said Goldencents trainer Doug O?Neill, who won the Derby and Preakness last year with I?ll Have Another, only to scratch the colt the day before the Belmont because of a tendon injury. ?But we?ve seen Goldencents do some brilliant things in the afternoon. If he does, I think he can beat him.?

Maybe it?s Itsmyluckyday, another top 3-year-old who did not handle the sloppy track and finished 15th in the Derby.

?He?s given me every sign that he?s ready for the war; he?s ready for the race; he?s ready for the battle,? trainer Eddie Plesa Jr., said. ?Let?s just get it on.?

Or maybe it?s Departing, one of the three horses in the race who did not run in the Derby. Orb knows Departing well ? the two were pals growing up at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Ky., and ran around together in the same field. The gelding has won four of five starts, and comes into the Preakness off a win in the Illinois Derby.

And, of course, there?s D. Wayne Lukas, who has three of the nine entries in Oxbow, Will Take Charge and Titletown Five, a colt owned by Green Bay Packer greats Paul Hornung and Willie Davis. Lukas, like Baffert, has five Preakness wins, and his next victory in a Triple Crown race would give him a record 14 ? one more than ?Sunny Jim? Fitzsimmons.

Oxbow was sixth and Will Take Charge eighth in the Derby, while Titletown Five is a maiden winner who ran fourth in the Derby Trial.

?You have to be careful about that much emphasis on one race,? Lukas said of Orb?s Derby win. ?You change the surface, you shorten the race, you put him in the one hole. These are things he?ll have to overcome. He?s the best horse. It?s his race to lose. But it only takes one horse to spoil your day.?

Weather could be a factor, too. The latest forecast for Saturday is calling for a 50 percent chance of rain with temperatures reaching the low 70s. Post time for the race on NBC is 6:20 p.m.

While Orb will take his shot at becoming the 34th horse with a chance at the Triple Crown ? 11 have done it, 19 failed and three others did not run in the Belmont ? several other historic milestones are in play. Rosie Napravnik will be aboard 5-1 second choice Mylute in an attempt to become the first female to the win the Preakness and Kevin Krigger, who rides Goldencents, looks to become the first black jockey to win since Willie Simms with Sly Fox in 1898.

Orb?s rapid rise began with his win in the Fountain of Youth, followed by a solid victory in the Florida Derby before he ran off with the Kentucky Derby. The colt is co-owned by racing royalty ? Ogden Mills ?Dinny? Phipps and his first cousin, Marylander Stuart Janney III. They run their racing operation the traditional way ? breeding and racing their own horses rather than attending sales and trying to buy champions.

McGaughey has been the Phipps? trainer for 28 years, and has campaigned such champions as Easy Goer, Inside Information and the undefeated Personal Ensign.

?This has kind of shown that with Stuart Janney?s relationship with breeding that it can be done in a different way,? McGaughey said. ?There?s a long line of pedigree that?s been in their family for years and years and years and there?s a lot of thought process in breeding horses to mares ? whether right or wrong. And we might have gotten a little lucky this time.?

One manual shouldn't dictate US mental health research

The new edition of the DSM "bible" is so flawed that the US National Institute of Mental Health is right to abandon it, says eminent psychiatrist Allen Frances

The controversies swirling around the imminent update of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, produced by the American Psychiatric Association, have badly hurt confidence in psychiatric diagnosis. The problem arises from the fact that the update, called DSM-5, includes new diagnoses and reductions in thresholds for old ones, that expand the already stretched boundaries of psychiatry and threaten to turn diagnostic inflation into hyperinflation.

In my opinion, the DSM-5 process has been secretive, closed and sloppy ? with confidentiality restraints, constantly missed deadlines, botched field testing, the cancellation of an important quality control step, and a rush to publication. A petition for independent scientific review endorsed by 56 mental health organisations was ignored. There is no reason to believe that DSM-5 is safe or scientifically sound.

And now we have the announcement of a major shift away from DSM by the US National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) when it comes to deciding how it allocates its considerable research resources (see "Psychiatry divided as mental health 'bible' denounced").

The research problem in psychiatry actually goes much deeper than the aberration that is DSM-5. In 1980, when DSM-III was published, there was great optimism that its provision of a reasonably reliable diagnostic system would rapidly lead to a revolution in psychiatric research.

No impact on diagnosis

In one way, this did indeed happen ? but in another it did not. Psychiatric research quickly went from stepchild to darling; in most medical schools it is now just behind internal medicine in attracting external funding. The happy result has been an explosive advance in basic neuroscience. But, disappointingly, 30 years of advancing knowledge has had no impact whatever on psychiatric diagnosis or treatment.

Translational research ? work that bridges the gap between basic research and clinical application ? has been distressingly slow in all of medicine, and it is particularly difficult in psychiatry because the brain is so much more complicated than any other organ. Within a few years, we will likely have accurate tests for Alzheimer's disease, but there is nothing in the pipeline for any psychiatric disorder, and it may take decades before we have accurate biological tests for them.

DSM-5 hoped to include biological markers that might reflect past research and promote future research. This was a premature and unrealisable ambition: the science simply isn't there now. And it has become increasingly clear that the DSM descriptive system may be a research dead end because its syndromes are too diverse and overlapping to be good research targets.

So the NIMH has wisely chosen another approach that is more likely to bear fruit ? picking simpler targets for study and bringing to bear all of its enormous resources to determine their causal mechanism. What we call schizophrenia does not present in one uniform way, and there will not be one cause ? there probably are hundreds.

Simplify the question

It makes more sense to simplify the research question by studying the genesis of hallucinations than to expect to understand the diverse causes of complex construct schizophrenia. The brain is likely to remain frustratingly elusive in providing answers, but focusing the target is our best hope.

Where does all this leave current clinical work? Schizophrenia remains an immensely useful construct ? imperfect for sure, but very helpful in clinical communication and in guiding treatment. The DSM disorders are all fallible and subjective constructs, but most are useful as temporary way stations until we learn more and can develop better ones.

The mistake of DSM-5 was to attempt to go beyond current knowledge. Its new disorders are a dream list for researchers, but will be a nightmare to the patients who are misidentified and treated unnecessarily.

Anything that goes into the manual should already have passed rigorous research testing; the manuals are far too important to include untested hypotheses. DSM-5 is not, and cannot be, an appropriate guide to future research.
