Obama-allied group airs anti-Romney tax ad

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) ? A political group supporting the re-election of President Barack Obama is airing a new ad that criticizes challenger Mitt Romney for advocating tax policies that would increase the tax burden on middle-income families.

The ad by Priorities USA Action, a so-called super political action committee, uses an analysis by the independent Tax Policy Center and declares that Romney's plan would raise taxes on an average family by up to $2,000 while giving tax breaks of $250,000 to multimillionaires.

The ad is airing in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin.

Obama advisers say Romney and his allied super PACS have a 5-2 advantage in some television markets over Obama and his supporters.

UN rights chief cites problems in Syria, Bahrain

GENEVA (AP) ? The U.N.'s top rights official laid out the world's most significant human rights issues Monday, criticizing Syria and Bahrain but also mentioning problems in Western countries like France and Greece.

The assessment by U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay is important because it sets the tone for the U.N.'s 47-nation Human Rights Council, whose monthlong session opened Monday.

The U.N. secretary-general, Ban Ki-moon, on a visit to commemorate Switzerland joining the world body a decade ago, challenged the council to focus attention on five areas, including discrimination, violence based on sexual orientation and gender identity and the rights of women.

"It is an affront to our conscience that millions of people still struggle against poverty, hunger and disease. These conditions violate their fundamental human rights," he said.

Pillay argued that human rights are key to peace, development and humanitarian efforts, and she began by citing Syria's civil war as an area of grave concern with devastating consequences for civilians.

Activists say up to 26,000 people have been killed in Syria since an uprising began in March 2011 against President Bashar Assad's regime.

Next on her list was Bahrain for handing down what she called harsh prison sentences against activists and opponents.

Pillay spoke of human rights problems in Colombia, Ivory Coast and Congo, then mentioned France and Greece. She also noted issues in Kenya, Maldives, Mali, Mauritania, Mexico, Myanmar and many other countries.

"I am also worried by the recent forced closure of Roma camps in France, which have affected hundreds of people, making them even more vulnerable and exposed to a whole range of human rights concerns," Pillay told the packed chamber.

"I acknowledge a number of steps that have been taken by the government, but further efforts must be made to address this situation" and integrate Roma, or Gypsies, into society, she said.

In August, police raids in Paris and other French cities dismantled camps used by Roma from Eastern Europe and left hundreds without shelter. It echoed a crackdown on Roma two years ago under conservative former President Nicolas Sarkozy that drew criticism.

But the French government since then has made it easier for Roma, who mostly originate from Romania and Bulgaria, to get jobs and stay in France by expanding the number of sectors where residents of those nations can seek work. The government also abolished a tax paid by employers to hire people from the two countries.

Pillay also noted problems in Greece, where there has been a surge in racist attacks against immigrants with dark skin.

"Equally troubling are violent xenophobic attacks against migrants, refugees and asylum seekers in recent months, for example, in Greece," Pillay said. "I am also concerned about reports that the police appeared to have been unable to respond effectively to protect victims of xenophobic crimes. "

Greece launched a campaign in August to try to seal its 200-kilometer (130-mile) northeastern border in the face of a crippling financial crisis that has caused joblessness to soar.

Diplomats from dozens of countries, including Bahrain, France and Greece, were scheduled to respond to Pillay's criticisms later Monday.

Paul Ryan Set to Begin Debate Prep Sunday

RENO, Nev. - Rep. Paul Ryan will officially kick off his debate preparation this Sunday in Oregon, two Romney aides traveling with the GOP vice presidential candidate said Friday.

In a briefing on the debate prep, the aides said now that Ryan's convention speech is over, preparing for the debate with Vice President Joe Biden is their "primary focus."

The vice presidential debate will take place on Oct 11 and will be moderated by ABC News' Martha Raddatz.

"Our initial focus was having a smooth rollout of the vice presidential nominee," an aide said. "The primary focus following that was the convention speech. Since the convention, we have shifted so that preparing for the vice presidential debate is probably the highest-profile event for the vice presidential candidate from now until the election."

Sunday will be an entire day of debate prep, but they will give the Wisconsin Republican a small break in the middle of the day to watch the Green Bay Packers game.

"We are negotiating right now how much he gets to watch," an advisor said. "We are going to be doing this more and more, which is going somewhere where we can really lock down for a full day, not just do one-offs, an hour here, an hour there, but really dedicate a full day to debate prep. This will be the first of many sessions."

The staff that travels with Ryan will be on hand on Sunday, but the still-mysterious stand-in for Joe Biden will not be in attendance and sources would not reveal the identity of Ryan's sparring partner. Ohio senator and veepstakes contender Rob Portman plays President Obama in debate prep with Mitt Romney.

The aides agreed to brief a small group of reporters traveling with the candidate on the topic of debate prep in exchange for their names not being used.

They added that the preparation sessions will happen in places that are without distractions and they will try to not do them in Ryan's hometown of Janesville, Wis., because they don't want to get in the way of Ryan's time with his wife and three young children.

However, last Sunday evening, when Ryan was at home in Janesville, he did watch the 2008 debate between Biden and Sarah Palin, one of the aides said.

They made it clear that Ryan and his team are "intensely focused" on the debate and they don't "take the challenge lightly." They also seemed to want to tamp down expectations on the House budget chairman by noting Biden's years of experience, which include serving more than 30 years in the United States Senate and running for president twice. One of the aides called Biden "one of the most experienced debaters in American political life."

The aides said they have been doing policy briefings on a "range of issues," including "domestic, economic, foreign policy and national security," and that many of those briefings "dovetail with debate prep."

As Ryan and his team focused on his convention speech, they assembled a team to build the briefing materials in large, white binders. The aides called this process an "exhaustive project."

Since then, and including Friday afternoon in Reno, Ryan has been "editing" and "restructuring" the binders, which contain one issue topic each, to make sure he is both "comfortable" with them and they are in his voice.

"A lot of what he has done thus far has consisted of reading briefing books and editing briefing books to make sure that those binders reflect not just the policies of the Romney-Ryan campaign but also sound like him, things that he is comfortable with ? reading information, absorbing it, putting in his own words and getting really comfortable with it," an aide said.

But now begins a new phase.

The aides said they didn't want to reveal too much of their debate strategy, but said they believed most of the debate will be focused on jobs and the economy. They stressed that because their candidate was steeped in policy they were more focused on "working through some of the most likely topics, some likely questions and just working through answers, counterpoints to vice president Biden's arguments and answers" as opposed to a "crash course" on policy.

"It really isn't like, you know, X, you need to know Y - that isn't how we think about it," an advisor said. "We think that you're a very informed legislator with a lot of experience dealing with a range of policy issues and now you are about to be thrust into a debate with one of the most experienced debaters in American politics who has debated on this level with these high stakes many times. So it is more thinking about how to prepare for debating on these issues rather than just becoming an expert on these issues."

Romney spent much of the last week in a "debate camp" at his former Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey's home in Vermont, and the Ryan aides said they will "do something similar" for Ryan, although they have not selected the location.

"Sunday is a mini version of it," one of the aides said, noting they will not have a mock debate at the first session. "Look at what we are doing Sunday. We are doing it somewhere remote. We are doing it somewhere where there aren't distractions. And that obviously is the mode. ? It is somewhere where we ? sort of can really concentrate and [where there] aren't distractions."

In 2008, Sarah Palin also went somewhere somewhat remote: to John McCain's ranch in the desert of Sedona, Ariz.

The Ryan aides added that no outside advisors will be coming in to help with prep, but they may "rotate in" Romney staffers from Boston.

I have been talking with John about destructive relationships of all sorts like I blogged in ?If You Lay With the Dogs You?re Gonna Get Fleas? and ?Domestic Abuse? Part 1 and Part 2.? I guess because I am still baffled by some of my past friendships, confused how I got so tangled up in the drama of them, trying to learn more about myself, trying to help my kids understand how important their close relationships are, and trying to properly gauge new relationships since I?m brand new to the area here?(ya know, who I can really trust with the intimate details of my heart versus generic topics like shopping and coffee.? I?m still in coffee only mode).

So, while talking with him he says, you know boundaries are biblical.? I looked at him slightly confused.? Now, I?m sure that lots of people already knew that, but I never saw it that way.? In my mind, God just wants peace, love, and openness between everyone with everyone cooperating together at all times.? You know, heaven on earth between his many creations.?? Later that afternoon after I gave John that completely confused look, I opened an email from him that went something like this:

God does call us to live peacefully as long as it is possible.? Romans 12:18, ?If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men.?? But, being at peace with all men does not mean having the same level of relationship with all men.? From the beginning God set up boundaries for our own safety and we need to set up boundaries for our own safety as well.

God set up physical boundaries and breaking them has consequences.

?Mark off a boundary all around the mountain. Warn the people, Be careful! Do not go up on the mountain or even touch its boundaries. Anyone who touches the mountain will certainly be put to death.? Exodus 19:12.

God?set up?boundaries within relationships and breaking them has consequences.

There are clear boundaries set by God about marriage; warnings to avoid those who slander and gossip (A gossip goes around telling secrets, so don?t hang around with chatterers Proverbs 20:19); friendship levels with people who have bad tempers (Don?t befriend angry people or associate with hot-tempered people, or you will learn to be like them and endanger your soul Pro 22:24-25).

Boundaries between believers and unbelievers (Don?t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness?? 2 Cor 6:14-15); truth about friendships (Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble. Pro 13:20); warnings about financial relationships (Don?t agree to guarantee another person?s debt or put up security for someone else.? If you can?t pay it, even your bed will be snatched from under you.? Pro 22:26-27);

Boundaries about?believers who are lazy (stay away from all believers who live idle lives and don?t follow the tradition they received from us.? For you know that you ought to imitate us. We were not idle when we were with you.? We never accepted food from anyone without paying for it. We worked hard day and night so we would not be a burden to any of you.? 2 Thes 3:6-8);

Boundaries between fellow believers when sin dominates their lives (When I wrote to you before, I told you not to associate with people who indulge in sexual sin.? But I wasn?t talking about unbelievers who indulge in sexual sin, or are greedy, or cheat people, or worship idols. You would have to leave this world to avoid people like that.? I meant that you are not to associate with anyone who claims to be a believer yet indulges in sexual sin, or is greedy, or worships idols, or is abusive, or is a drunkard, or cheats people. Don?t even eat with such people.? It isn?t my responsibility to judge outsiders, but it certainly is your responsibility to judge those inside the church who are sinning.? God will judge those on the outside; but as the Scriptures say, ?You must remove the evil person from among you.?? 1 Cor 5:9-13);

Boundaries about?associating?with wicked people:? ?Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers.? But they delight in the law of the LORD, meditating on it day and night.? They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season.? Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.? But not the wicked!? They are like worthless chaff, scattered by the wind.? They will be condemned at the time of judgment.? Sinners will have no place among the godly.? For the LORD watches over the path of the godly, but the path of the wicked leads to destruction.? Psalm 1.

I?m currently reading (and attending an online bible study about ? you should look into it it?s awesome!) the book Unglued by Lysa?Terkeurst.? I love love love this statement she makes ?Just because we extend forgiveness doesn?t mean we keep that person in our close-knit circle.? Forgiveness is mandatory; reconciliation is optional.?

Yes friends, boundaries are for our protection and safety.? Use wisdom in your close friendships.? Your relationships will still have road bumps, the need for forgiveness and mercy, and communication issues.? Choose your intimate friendships (close friends, prayer partners, boyfriend/girlfriend, spouse, people who counsel you, and your pastors) prayerfully and carefully.

Scholars may have 2nd photo of Emily Dickinson

AMHERST, Mass. -- Scholars at Amherst College in Massachusetts believe a collector may have what would be just the second known photo of Emily Dickinson.

The college says the collector, who wishes to remain anonymous, bought the photo in 1995 in Springfield. He brought it to the college's archive and special collections staff in 2007, and they've been researching it since.

Last month, it was publicly shown during the Emily Dickinson International Society conference in Cleveland, Ohio.

The daguerreotype, dated around 1859, appears to show Dickinson sitting next to a friend, Kate Scott Turner.

There's strong evidence it's Dickinson, including comparisons of high-resolution digital images of the newer photo with the known image, from 1847, said Mike Kelly, head of the archive and special collections department at Amherst College.

Kelly said perhaps the best evidence is an ophthalmological report that compared similarities in the eyes and facial features of the women in the photos. "I believe strongly that these are the same people," concluded the doctor who wrote the report. Researchers are also trying to get higher resolution pictures of the dress in the picture, to see if it matches fabric samples known to belong to Dickinson.

Researchers can't yet definitively say the photo is Dickinson, but "I think we can get beyond reasonable doubt," Kelly said.

That could shift some perceptions about the Amherst native, Kelly said. For instance, a book in the 1950s was the first to propose Dickinson had a lesbian relationship with Turner, Kelly said.

"This is photographic evidence of their friendship, whatever the nature of that friendship was," he said.

The photo contradicts a misperception that Dickinson never left her house, when in fact she was quite social in her younger years, Kelly said. It also offers a strikingly different image from the existing photo of Dickinson as a frail, teen girl, which was taken before she began writing poetry. The newer image was taken when she was roughly 30.

"This is really when she's coming into the height of her powers," Kelly said. "To see her as this fully mature woman rather than this sickly little girl, I think it just shifts the way people think about what she's writing."

Amherst's collections department has a copy of the daguerreotype, which it says can be viewed on request.

Book Review : BOOK REVIEW: DNA USA: A Genetic Portrait of America by Bryan Sykes

A human geneticist has dipped his DNA testing kit into the great melting pot, exploring the genetic history, genealogy and anthropology of Americans. Sykes travels across the country meeting ordinary people and creating portraits of their chromosomes that reflect from whence their ancestors hailed. All the volunteers are given pseudonyms drawn from Hollywood movies, but the stories of their heritage are engagingly real.

As the author of The Seven Daughters of Eve and other books, Sykes is an old hand at writing about genetics for the general public. His experience shows as he deftly introduces highly technical information in reader-friendly ways.

He spends most of the first third of this new book on the ancestry of various immigrant groups, telling their tales through DNA found in mitochondria and on the Y chromosome. Mitochondrial DNA is passed from mother to child, and Y chromosomes trace paternal lines. Sykes has studied human history extensively through these two genetic lenses. Consequently, he focuses there and doesn?t tackle recent genetic tests that sample all of a person?s DNA until Chapter 11.

During his journey, Sykes encounters people who embrace DNA testing as a way to clear up messy genealogical records. He also meets skeptics, who see the technology as a way to discredit their cultural heritage. Sykes doesn?t shy away from these criticisms, presenting a well-balanced view of the disparate attitudes.
